Spanish biotech firm Cocoon Bioscience has launched its first industrial-scale plant for producing recombinant proteins using living insect bioreactors at the Bizkaia Technology Park in Spain. The company's new 4,000 square meter facility, with 2,300 square meters dedicated to production, demonstrates impressive capabilities - generating up to 5 kilograms of recombinant protein annually with potential to scale beyond 20 kilograms. What sets Cocoon apart is their innovative Crisbio technology, which utilizes moth pupae as natural bioreactors. This approach offers an efficient and cost-effective alternative to traditional fermentation methods for protein production. Their growth factor portfolio is specifically designed to support the cultivated meat industry, featuring animal-free proteins including FGF-2, PDGF, and TGF-β1.
