#SMMEs have varying needs and limited capacity to implement key policy requirements in the health sector. It is common for small-large enterprises to implement policy only when it is compulsory. We need to curb that. Occupational health and related legislatures need a proactive approach, and we are the partners you need to fully interpret and implement policy for a great work environment. Monash University’s study has recently presented an assessment that is referred to as “working years lost” which expresses the extent of the problem of employees’ injuries in Australia. The research concluded that each year, 41,194 working years are lost from about 150,000 workers’ compensation claims. Trauma to the joints and muscles causes 40% of the loss of years, and musculoskeletal disorders cause 21%. In addition, mental health conditions, which account for just 5% of total claims, account for 13% of lost years on average. Male workers and those over 45 are most vulnerable. This seems to offer a more realistic way of establishing the extent of work-related injuries than conventional methods, underlining the necessity for better occupational health initiatives and rehabilitation plans.
