Navigating an Oversea Petrochemical Project During COVID-19 🌍🔧—Powered by the "Avengers" Team When a global pandemic hit, I faced one of the most challenging projects of my career. We had to adjust on the fly while navigating a complex petrochemical deal involving an Engineering Procurement Company (EPC), a System Integrator (SI), and a remote project implementation during COVID-19. Then came COVID-19. Travel restrictions prevented us from deploying engineers abroad. Rather than seeing this as a setback. We hired a local Authorized Service Provider (ASP), ensuring they were trained and certified to meet our high standards. It was a deep dive into remote project management. 🌟 Key to Success: The Avengers Team What made this project successful was the team. We assembled our own "Avengers" team to handle every challenge, and at the core was #MrJChan, a crucial member who went onsite despite strict quarantine protocols. His determination to face these challenges head-on was pivotal to the project’s success. While #MrJChan managed onsite operations, I remotely coordinated between the factory, the Singapore team, and the local ASP. Managing these moving parts remotely was no easy task, but the strength of our team and clear communication ensured smooth operations. Here’s how we navigated the project: Remote Project Management 📋✈️ COVID-19 forced us to rethink execution. Unable to send engineers onsite, I hired a local ASP, leading their training and certification remotely. Clear communication was crucial—we held regular virtual meetings and progress check-ins to ensure everything stayed on track. ASP Management 🤝 The local ASP became more than a project partner—they’re now a reliable, long-term collaborator. By empowering the local team, we not only delivered on this project but set the stage for future success. Teamwork Wins the Day 🏅 With Mr. J. Chan onsite and myself managing operations from Singapore, this project was a true test of teamwork and trust. During my experience in Facility Managements, leading contractors across multiple Tasks, I had the opportunity to manage the full spectrum of teams, from project managers, Admin and technical staff. My role required not only ensuring that FM goals were met but also overcoming several challenges that demanded strategic leadership and adaptability with full support from Senior Managements. **Managing Project Managers** One of my key responsibilities was coordinating with project managers to ensure that all tasks aspects, including timelines, budgets, and quality, were maintained. This involved continuous communication, monitoring progress, and realigning goals when necessary. I implemented structured reporting and review systems that helped streamline communication and kept all stakeholders aligned with the FM objectives. **Leading Technical Teams** On the technical front, I was responsible for translating SOW requirements into actionable plans. This required a deep understanding of the FM technical aspects, ensuring that deliverables met high standards and adhered to the defined scope. In some cases, I had to bridge the gap between the non-technical and technical teams, ensuring everyone was on the same page and working towards the same goals. **Challenges Encountered** One of the most significant challenges was managing coordination between multiple teams. Each team had different priorities and sometimes conflicting objectives, which led to communication breakdowns and delays. It required strong leadership to ensure that everyone stayed aligned and focused on the overall project goals. Technical challenges were also a frequent hurdle, particularly when faced with complex issues that required innovative problem-solving. I worked closely with the technical teams to resolve these issues, often diving into the details to ensure that we could deliver solutions on time without compromising on quality. **Efforts and Solutions** To overcome these challenges, I focused on fostering collaboration and clear communication across all levels. Regular meetings, workshops, and checkpoints helped ensure that everyone had a clear understanding of their roles and responsibilities. I encouraged a culture of transparency, where issues could be discussed openly and addressed quickly. I also worked to streamline processes and introduced tools that allowed for more efficient tracking of progress, resource allocation, and communication. These improvements not only helped manage the day-to-day operations but also enhanced team morale and performance. **Conclusion** Through my leadership, we were able to successfully complete areas within FM on time and within budget, despite the challenges we faced. This experience has reinforced the importance of clear communication, strong leadership, and flexibility in FM. I have gained valuable insights into balancing technical and managerial aspects, and I continue to apply these lessons in future.
