Saudi Arabia officially launches bid to host 2034 FIFA World Cup Sole contender Saudi Arabia, on Friday, officially launched a bid tagged “Growing Together” to host the 2034 FIFA World Cup, the Saudi Arabia Football Federation (SAFF) has announced. In October last year, Saudi Arabia became the only country in the race to stage the tournament after Australia pulled out of the race a few hours before the FIFA deadline for intending countries to declare their interest. Despite being the remaining in the race to host the 2034 World Cup, FIFA regulations require the Gulf Kingdom to officially bid for the tournament ahead of confirmation by a FIFA congress later this year. Speaking about the bid, Yasser Al Misehal, the president of the Saudi Arabia Football Federation, said the country was able to win the bid because of the country’s “rapid transformation”. “Telling our football story to the world is of massive importance,” he added. “We’ve made unprecedented progress in both the men’s and women’s game, and our bid is an open invitation to the world to join us on this exciting journey.” According to the BBC, Saudi Arabia has invested over £5bn in football as the country seeks to diversify its economy in the coming years. However, some critics, especially in the West, have accused the country of sportwashing, claiming Saudi Arabia, which has hosted other major sporting events such as Formula One, golf and boxing, is doing so to cover its human rights violations. WHY THERE IS NO EXTRA TIME FOR THE AFCON 3RD PLACE MATCH. You may have noticed last night that there was no extra time in the 3rd place or classification match between the DR Congo and South Africa in the 2023 Afcon. The game went straight to penalty shootouts. That was also the case in Cameroon two years ago between Burkina Faso and Cameroon. No extra time as game went straight to penalty shootouts. Well, the reason is simple. Each competition has its rules and regulations. According to those of the Africa Cup of Nations, there is no extra time for the classification or 3rd place match. I have heard and read so many people say globally, there is no extra time in classification or 3rd place matches. That is not true. There is extra time at the level of the Fifa World Cup (3rd place match). A good example was the 1986 Fifa World Cup. The classification or third place game between Belgium and France went into extra time. The match ended 2-2 after 90 minutes of regular football. And then it went into extra time, where France won 4-2 on penalties. Surprisingly, since the introduction of the third place match in the 1934 World Cup, there have been no draws recorded in any third-place match aside from the 1986 Fifa World Cup. Some competitions like the Afcon often skip extra time to save players from having to compete for an extra 30 minutes, but the World Cup rightly or wrongly doesn't take this stance. Meanwhile, today is the D day. Can Nigeria increase the stars on their jersey to 4? Can Côte d'Ivoire catch up on 3 with the Super Eagles? The dates have been set for the following tournaments: - FIFA U-20 World Cup Chile 🇨🇱 2025™ (27 September – 19 October 2025) - FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Morocco 🇲🇦 2025™ (17 October – 8 November 2025) - FIFA Futsal Women’s World Cup Philippines 🇵🇭 2025™ (21 November – 7 December 2025) Additionally, Asunción, Paraguay 🇵🇾 has been chosen as the host of the 75th FIFA Congress, set to take place on 15 May 2025. This is the first time a FIFA Congress will be hosted in Paraguay, and will take place during their 100th year of FIFA membership. It will be the sixth Congress held in South America, but just the first-ever Ordinary FIFA Congress held in the region that is not directly linked to staging a FIFA World Cup final tournament. FIFA President, Gianni Infantino, said: "We had a very productive session discussing the global and inclusive development of our game.
