🗣️ On November 6, the European Parliament conducted the Confirmation Hearing for Hadja Lahbib, Commissioner-designate for Preparedness, Crisis Management, and Equality. While this is a significant step, we regretfully observe that during the hearing and within the mission letter from the European Commission President, there was limited focus on disability rights and a lack of a comprehensive approach to inclusion. 🪢 Despite merging these two crucial portfolios, we remain hopeful that there will still be enough room to work on equality in Europe. 💪 At #TVE, we keep pushing for disability rights to be included in all policy areas. #DisabilityRights #EqualityForAll #InclusiveEurope #Advocacy #EuropeanParliament #ConfirmationHearings

Amplifying Voices Training Update - Day 1 Recap I'm thrilled to update you on the "Amplifying Voices Fellowship" organized by the Inclusive Friends Association (IFA)Inclusive Friends Association , which started yesterday, July 25th, 2024, and runs through July 30th! Day 1 Highlights: Our first day was packed with insightful sessions, covering essential topics for our journey ahead: 1. Understanding Disabilities: We delved into the various types of disabilities, breaking down stereotypes and fostering a deeper understanding of the experiences and challenges faced by persons with disabilities. 2. Basic Concepts of Gender and Disability-Based Violence: We explored the intersections of gender and disability, discussing the unique forms of violence and discrimination that women and girls with disabilities face. 3. Understanding the Basics of Advocacy: We covered the fundamental principles of advocacy, equipping ourselves with the tools and strategies to effectively champion disability rights and combat gender-based violence. ABOUT THE TRAINING The aim of the Amplifying Voices initiative is to: 1. Support Community Actions and Accountability: Collaborate with young disability rights advocates to foster community actions and build accountability mechanisms to address gender-based violence in Nigeria. 2. Strengthen Capacity of Young Leaders: Empower young advocates and leaders with/without disabilities to spotlight and creatively address the incidence of gender-based violence against women and girls with disabilities. Uniting for Equality: Proactive Strategies to Protect Gender and Disability Rights As global movements advocate for justice and equality, a new wave of collaboration is emerging to address complex challenges surrounding gender-based violence, disability rights, and reproductive health. With key international observances like the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence and International Human Rights Day, advocates are calling for bold, united action to advance progress on multiple fronts. https://lnkd.in/dJnKEbrS

Bridging the Gaps for Women with Disability   Women with disabilities are disproportionately affected by #domesticviolence and face unique challenges accessing legal and other support services. Significant gaps exist in how the legal system supports and protects women with cognitive impairment, including: 🔸 Inaccessibility: women with disabilities often need support understanding their rights. 🔸 Lack of specialised advocacy: specialised, trained advocates can support women with cognitive impairment receive legal advice and other specialised services. 🔸 Underreporting and mistrust: Women with disabilities may be hesitant or unable to report violence, as they are likely to be disbelieved. “We are witnessing an alarming trend where people with disabilities are seeking assisted suicide due to social deprivation, poverty, and lack of essential supports,” said Krista Carr, executive vice president of Inclusion Canada.
