Toshiba Europe GmbH meets the The Office of Economic Development Düsseldorf🤝 Almost exactly one year ago, Toshiba Corporation’s first R&D facility in continental Europe, the Regenerative Innovation Center (RIC), was officially inaugurated in Düsseldorf. To mark this small anniversary, this week Toshiba Europe CEO Hiroshi Morikawa, together with Jun Sato, Kohei Onizuka, Kageyuki Iso and Kazuto Hasebe, gave us the honor of visiting our office and updating us on the latest developments regarding the RIC and additional newly established business development functions🙏 The RIC was established as a platform where Toshiba's experts work together with partners such as RWTH Aachen University and the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy to promote innovation in the field of circular economy and carbon neutrality. As part of these activities, Toshiba explicitly pursues an interdisciplinary approach in order to achieve not only sustainable but also regenerative technological solutions that have a positive impact on both society and the environment 💚 In addition to RIC’s latest activities, we were also introduced to two newly established net-zero solutions businesses in Toshiba Europe’s Düsseldorf HQ: Net-zero Business Hub (NBH) and Hydrogen Business Development (HBD). These new functions focus in particular on Toshiba’s capabilities in the field of H2 production, CO2 Capture and CO2 Utilization, where Toshiba has developed, for example, iridium-saving membrane electrode assemblies (MEA) for proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers or C2One, the world’s first system to electrolyze CO2 to CO💧🔋♻️ It was amazing to learn how advanced and strongly connected Toshiba's activities in these segments are, and thus also how much potential for cooperation with partners in various business and research areas the establishment of the RIC offers💡 In return, my colleagues Annette and Felix took the opportunity, to inform the Toshiba Europe team about the latest developments in the field of GreenTech and Circular Economy in Düsseldorf, such as the selection of the digihub - Digital Innovation Hub Düsseldorf/Rheinland GmbH as a GreenTech Hub within the de:hub network or the Circular X Challenge, which my colleague Felix is organizing on the occasion of the Circular Valley Convention next year ✅💪 We are already looking forward to supporting RIC’s future activities! #netzero #carbonneutral #circulareconomy #greentech #innovation #toshiba #duesseldorf

As we step into 2025, I feel optimistic about the road ahead! We have accomplished so much in the last months by pushing boundaries in innovation, sustainability, AI, and digitization. These efforts have set us up for what promises to be a rewarding year, despite a heavy regulatory overload in Europe and Germany that burdens global businesses strongly. In 2025, we will be doubling down on bold ideas and focused action. Innovation will stay at the core of everything we do—whether it is advancing sustainable adhesive technologies or using digitization and generative AI to create smarter operations and customer-first solutions. Sustainability will remain a key priority as we work harder to cut emissions. That said, realizing our full economic potential in Europe and Germany in particular also depends on strong support from policymakers. As the BDI - Bundesverband der Deutschen Industrie e.V. pointed out, we need a growth-focused agenda. This means cutting red tape, making energy costs competitive, and prioritizing long overdue investments in infrastructure and digital transformation. Groups like BVMW - Bundesverband mittelständische Wirtschaft e.V. have also highlighted how important it is to simplify sustainability reporting and supply chain rules—things that are essential for businesses to thrive. When these areas finally get the attention they deserve, it will create the right environment for companies like tesa to innovate and grow sustainably, globally. Because „business is not everything, but without business, everything is nothing“. Some weeks ago, at Hannover Messe 2024, I had the opportunity and the pleasure to present alongside Marc Deyda at the Siemens booth, on a topic in our views is a key challenge for the modern battery industry: Sustainable and Competitive Battery Production. 🎬 Check out the replay: https://lnkd.in/ebJGC_yU We talked about the vital role of digitalization in enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of battery production, which is particularly relevant for the growing European market. In our session, we discussed how Siemens and Accenture collaborate to provide advisory and digital solutions for cell manufacturers, supporting the lifecycle of battery manufacturing plants from initial conceptualization to late-stage optimization. In the future, once the dynamic race to enter the cell producer business has settled down, the competitiveness of cell manufacturers and their Gigafactories will be decided by the highest product quality and production efficiency, above all the minimization of scrapped battery cells that do not meet the customer requirements. The Schneider Electric and AVEVA teams also demonstrated industrial innovation in industries such as biopharma. BiosanaPharma has used AVEVA Data Hub to collect diverse data, share it with partners, and create a digital twin to simulate experiments. These technologies helped the company optimize its process efficiencies and manufacture more cost-effective medicines.
