I had an unexpected but valuable one-on-one once. In late 2022, I was flying from Delhi to Bengaluru and reading a book on some security basics to pass the time. The person sitting next to me noticed what I was reading and it piqued his interest. A conversation started and I got to know that he was a Senior Staff Engineer (reporting to Director) in a big electronics (chips/semiconductors) MNC and ~4-5 years more experienced than me. Over the course of next 1 hour or so, we talked a good deal in a semi-sporadic fashion. It was easy to make out that he was doing well professionally and his personal life seemed sorted enough. Due to my life circumstances at that time, some of his words stuck with me. Career: 1. Don't accept a job offer where you won't be able to perform really well in. His career growth had been steep as he developed expertise in an important domain. He only accepted the opportunities where he could use his strengths. 2. He found it fulfilling to be an IC and did not want to switch to management for another half a decade or so. He liked the fact that could spend his time designing architecture, trying out new tech, suggesting new projects and did not have to focus on managerial things like chasing reportees to get things delivered on time. Personal life: 1. You cannot chose your partner by logic e.g. defining a checklist and then ticking of boxes on that checklist. The checklist/logic goes out the window when you meet the "right" person. He was married and had a kid. He felt his life was much better now than when he was a bachelor. #oneonone #mentors
