Dissecting a simple process, such as boiling an egg, can showcase how mathematics can aid seemingly simple processes. At Sigma Solutions' Mathematical Modelling and Optimisation department we can apply principles to develop #optimalsolutions for you, catered to your business needs. This can be in the bulk-production of cooked foods such as eggs, or the pasteurisation of milk in the dairy industry. Using mathematics and taking such a simple example of something many of us do in our homes or in the hospitality industry, and realising that just because we have done it in a certain way for many years might not be the most efficient or optimal way in terms of cost and #energy saving provides, and excuse the pun, food for thought! Imagine what our bespoke and tailored approach at Sigma Solutions can do for your #business.... Reach out to us to see if we can help you optimise and streamline and improve your business in terms of logistics, cost saving , process streamlining , etc Sigma Solutions - "Shaping tomorrow with expertise & Innovation"

When we shop, we look for the freshest products so we can enjoy them for longer. But what goes into making sure that meat stays fresh and bread doesn't grow mould too quickly? Predictive modelling. It takes everything science knows about how meat and bread spoil and uses it to predict what could happen under different conditions. For example, if a loaf of bread develops mould, a predictive model can foresee this and suggest mould control changes to keep the bread fresh for longer. This means fewer experimental batches, less waiting time for results, and more rapid introduction of reliable products to market. It requires 140 liters of water to produce one cup of coffee! Ever researching a topic, and ended up learning about something different? That's what happened to me. Recently, I was learning about precision agriculture ( thanks to some amazing projects at our consulting society ) and about increasing agriculture demands in our country. However, I accidentally found out some interesting yet astonishing facts about coffee. According to the UN Food & Agriculture Organization, it requires 140 liters of water to grow, process, and transport enough beans for a single cup of coffee. ☕ Wait there is more... A simple t-shirt can take 2700+ liters of water, and a single pair of jeans requires 10,000+ liters to manufacture them. It feels everything we have taken for granted, has costed much more than one can imagine. Further, it feels more guilty, when one realizes that more than 800 million people still don't have clean water to drink! I don't know till when I will remember these facts but next time I spill coffee, I will surely remember this :) P.S. Let's choose to skip a coffee today! (kudos to you if you skip it regularly)

Have you counted your stock? If you have a March balance date, count your stock, inventory and livestock. You need to do a physical stock take of what you have and what quantity you have of each item. If you have stock you need to note what you paid for it. If you have inventory you need to work out what costs you incurred making it. While you’re gathering your stock number for your accounts, take some time to reflect on your stock. 1 What do you have on hand? Are any of the items obsolete? Is any stock damaged? Take the time to review what’s on hand and sort out any issues 2 What quantities are you carrying? Stock is necessary for trading, but it also ties up cash. You need to ensure you're carrying enough stock that you can fulfil trading requirements, but not so much that you're tying up cash that could be used elsewhere. Review what your ordering policies are and adjust to optimise. 3 What stock did you expect to have on hand? If you have an inventory system your stock take should match your system. If this is out it can point to a number of issues, and it might be time to review your systems. If you haven’t already, count your stock now. The longer you leave it the harder it is to work out. Dairy industry pros are well aware that poor supply chain planning results in reduced profit margins, lost business opportunities, and firefighting. Common challenges in dairy planning include: 🐮 Managing supply limitations 🥛 Optimizing the product mix 🧔 Prioritizing demand 🍧 Building accurate stock levels To enhance profitability and efficiency, dairy producers need a comprehensive solution that offers complete supply chain visibility and planning across operational, tactical, and strategic levels. The RELEX platform combines machine learning, mathematical optimization, and heuristics to support dairy producers’ strategic decision-making. Elevate your dairy operations. Coffee wet mill processing can encounter several challenges, including: 1. Quality Control: Inconsistent fermentation can lead to off-flavors or defects in the coffee. 2. Water Management: Insufficient water supply or poor quality can affect the washing and fermentation processes. 3. Machinery Issues: Breakdowns or inefficiencies in de-pulping and milling equipment can disrupt processing. 4. Fermentation Timing: Over- or under-fermentation can adversely affect flavor profiles. 5. Labor Management: Skilled labor shortages can hinder processing efficiency and quality. 6. Environmental Impact: Improper waste management can lead to pollution and sustainability concerns. 7. Pest and Disease Management: Issues with pests or diseases in the cherry quality can affect overall yield. 8. Cost Control: Rising costs of inputs like water, energy, and labor can squeeze profit margins. Addressing these challenges requires careful management, investment in technology, and adherence to best practices in processing.
