No rocket science … If there’s no connection … there’s no connection.   As a leader or manager, I must connect with my team to build trustful relationships.   So, I ask myself:   Does my team feel that I connect with them? Or do they think I am just acting?   Do they believe I care about them? Or do they think I am faking it?   And do they know they can trust me? Or do they think they can’t?   If I am honest … I don’t know. I should ask them these questions. As leaders we can feel alone on our island, with a drive to know all the answers, have the strategy, see and share the vision, that gets us and our teams the results we seek. On this journey we feel like no one understands or can help us. But this isn't quite true. We have our people. The teams that we have put in place, and while they may not have all the whole picture, they have those individual skills that when brought together make up the whole. The skill we often need to develop in order to bring the puzzle together is coaching. By using a coaching mindset, we can get curious about skills ans opinions, open up the conversation with our questions and deeper listening. As well as supporting thinking with our presence. Once of the questions I get asked the most when coaching leaders is “Can I say that?” The simple answer is YES! With some restrictions! When speaking to your team there is the obvious, watch your tone and don’t call people names, swear at them or attack them as a person. Also ask yourself the following: Is what you are about to say in line with your Vision, Mission and Values? Are you reacting to a different style, that while different is still in line with the culture? You have considered what you are going to say and where your personal energy is at? When we step into the role as a leader, we suddenly become more aware of what we are about to say, knowing that it will affect not only the person we are talking to but the whole team. Unfortunately, this sometimes causes leaders to say nothing. Saying nothing is not a better choice, the problem will not work itself out, it will most likely get worse. 𝙒𝙝𝙮 𝙄𝙣𝙫𝙤𝙡𝙫𝙚 𝙎𝙩𝙖𝙠𝙚𝙝𝙤𝙡𝙙𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙞𝙣 𝘼𝙡𝙡𝙞𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙇𝙚𝙖𝙙𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙝𝙞𝙥 𝘾𝙤𝙖𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜? Whenever I begin a coaching engagement and conduct stakeholder interviews, there's often someone who asks, "Is there something wrong with her?" about the leader I'm coaching. Engaging stakeholders is a crucial element of my coaching process. One key reason is that 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆. The example of the stakeholder's question reflects his perception: the belief that working with a coach implies something is wrong. For him, this perception is reality. However, involving stakeholders throughout the coaching process can help reshape perception. When stakeholders know that a leader is committed to personal development, they become more aware of the leader's progress and are more likely to notice positive changes. Another reason to involve stakeholders is that they are 𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁. By regularly engaging them and seeking their input, stakeholders can serve as an informal advisory board, offering suggestions for improvement. This involvement reinforces their awareness of the leader's commitment to growth, gradually shifting their perception. Over time, a new, more positive reality takes shape. Involving stakeholders in the coaching process not only enhances their perception of the leader but also creates a supportive environment for ongoing development.
