🚀 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞'𝐬 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐭𝐡 𝐅𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐆𝐚𝐩 - T.Capital launched its €2bn AUM fund for Growth & Later Stage Investments as well as MBOs. Last week, I was at the launch of the new fund T.Capital which addresses the significant hurdle faced by European startups due to the lack of growth and late-stage capital. This is a major step because despite the vibrant startup scene, European investors often can't write the big cheques needed for startups to scale, forcing promising tech successes to seek investment elsewhere. ⚡ Foreign investors are reaping the benefits of European startups by investing at the later stages. In terms of who's financing the growth, and where the value is going to accrue - usually the US -it’s a big risk for European players. Part of the reason for the funding gap is the fact that European institutional investors — backers of the region’s VCs — haven’t upped their allocation to European VC in line with the growth of the ecosystem. Hence, it's really important that Europe is stepping into the right direction. 🙌🏼 I am glad to see funds like T.Capital launch such big funds to address this challenge and retain Europe's top tech talent. A very interesting movement around the creation of "EU-Inc" is gathering momentum ahead of the new EU Commission taking their seats on Dec 1st. The key asks are to: 1. 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀 for startups who are raising funds. 2. 𝗘𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗮 𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗲, addressing significant variability between different member states and ultimately helping more employees benefit from a startup’s success. 3. 𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 and move it into English. This will simplify the process, reducing complexity. 💡 A Challenging Q3 for European Startups – But There’s Hope for Q4 💡 It’s been a tough quarter for European startups: 📉 late-stage funding dropping by a significant 70% from Q2. 👇 After an optimistic start to 2024 — with €47.6bn raised in the first half of the year — only €11.5bn was raised in Q3 across 1,206 rounds. This drop has left both founders and investors wondering what Q4 will bring. 🤔 🔑 Key developments: 🚖 Lilium, the German flying taxi startup, is struggling without government loan guarantees, sparking debate on how long governments should support deeptech companies.  🇬🇧 In the UK, founders are concerned about potential increases to capital gains tax, which could impact the country’s tech ecosystem.  🇪🇺 Across Europe, there’s growing pressure for a single, pan-European legal entity to help companies scale more efficiently across the EU. On the bright side, VC fundraising has remained strong. I feel not enough thought has (yet) been put into this initiative. While the article states that "the challenge will lie in how thoroughly officials will be able to scrutinize the adequacy of startup investment plans as well as the track record of applicants" , the real challenges are elsewhere: *will the officials have acquired the skills needed to understand and support the investment plans? *will systems be in place to define how capital gains will be handled, if an angel investor realizes gains after their 5 year residence period ends? There are several initiatives surfacing between private/public collaborations such as Japan FinTech Festival and entrepreneurship groups such as TiE Japan that can help shape a better outcome.

A decade of growth in VC investments The volume of capital invested in European early- and growth-stage startups has increased significantly since 2015, more than doubling for the former and tripling for the latter. Of the $30B invested so far this year, European investors have contributed 60%, or more than $18B. This is a more than twofold increase from the $7B equivalent in 2015. While the lion's share of funding is allocated to growth-stage companies, European VCs remain the primary source of capital for the early-stage tech ecosystem, accounting for almost 80% of funding, a level relatively similar to 2015. At later stages, European founders rely on an international investor base. After withdrawing in 2023, US investors contributed $9B to European startups in the first three quarters of this year. This is down significantly from the peak of $34B in 2021, reflecting a slowdown in new investments in line with the pullback of overall investment volumes in Europe. Similar to 2015, non-European investors together account for 47% of total funding, and US investors now account for 35% of the European growth funding pool, up from 30% a decade ago.
