Africa's food security hinges on safeguarding its indigenous seeds. These seeds are known for their resilience, ability to be replanted, and quick maturation. It's inspiring to witness smallholders leading the way in advocating and championing our agricultural sovereignty. #FoodSecurity #IndigenousSeeds #Agriculture #Sustainability

The Comprehensive African Agricultural Development Program(CAADP) focuses of several pillars to improve the agriculture sector productivity in Africa, by addressing key challenges such as increasing the area under sustainable land and water management, improving markets and related infrustructure and finally, improving food supply. However it falters, in my view, in isolating the Forest, Livestock and Fisheries sectors to be dealt with separately. I think this is where Africa misses the boat. We must adopt system thinking in our strategies. Agriculture is intricately linked to forestry because its the major factor in Forest Conversion. The Forest sector is also, therefore linked to agriculture! It's faulty to look at Africa's food security issue from a Crop perspective, notwithstanding the fact that the latter is a staple source in Africa. Food security will be delivered from all sources, in an integrated manner. Disasters, Climatic hazard risks and Climate Change affect all these sectors in a very linked fashion, so even this cant be looked in isolation.

#DYK that 40% of food between leaving the farm and getting to consumers is wastedin Kenya? This is according to a 2022 Food & Agriculture Organization (FAO) Of the United Nations (UN). report. This however shows an opportunity that the country should explore, to use #biodigesters to convert the organic waste to energy that can be used around the markets, and lessen food insecurity.♻️

The integration of pesticides into modern agricultural practices has undeniably revolutionized crop protection and bolstered yields. However, alongside these benefits looms a pressing concern: the profound negative impacts on food security, sustainable agriculture, environmental integrity, and public health, particularly evident in the consumption of pesticide-laden vegetables. Ghana faces a troubling surge in pesticide poisoning cases, fueled by various factors such as misuse, overuse, and disregard for essential precautionary measures like #pre harvest #intervals. Urgent action from stakeholders is imperative to confront this burgeoning challenge head-on. Prioritizing sustainable agricultural practices emerges as a critical imperative in safeguarding both human health, environmental resilience and #food #security. #Sustainable agriculture #Food Security

Thanks Jo for summarising this important report from Sustain: The alliance for better food and farming & Friends of the Earth Good to see practical solutions suggested for managing the huge amount of animals being reared in the UK.
Shocking new investigation by Sustain: The alliance for better food and farming Ruth Westcott and Friends of the Earth Clare Oxborrow on UK livestock industry... 💩10 large businesses produce almost 2x more excrement than the UK's 10 largest cities. 🐔These companies have almost 150 million animals in production at any one time, producing 55,000 tonnes of poo a day. 🚱They have operations in some of the UK's most polluted river catchment areas including the Wye, Trent and Severn. This is what typically happens: 1) Businesses generate waste 2) Businesses pass this waste on to farmers who use it as organic fertiliser 3) Waste flows into rivers ⛔We've got a perfect storm: 💩None of these companies have strong manure management policies to stop all this poo flowing into our rivers; 📋No/insufficient audits by UK Government to inspect production facilities and management practices; 🚨No solid regulatory framework to assess planning applications and stop new operations being set up in already polluted areas. 🤔If the UK is to meet its climate and nature targets while improving population health, this is an issue that needs urgent attention. Thanks Duncan Williamson for sharing! #intensiveagriculture #foodproduction #agribusiness #climate #nature #meat #factoryfarming
