KENYAN AGRITECH FIRM SILO AFRICA WINS SECOND PLACE AT AYuTe NextGen CHALLENGE. Silo Africa , a Kenyan agritech company founded by Eliud Rugut, has secured second place at the prestigious AYuTe NextGen Challenge held in Kigali, Rwanda. The AYuTe Africa NextGen competition, launched in 2024 by Heifer International, is a youth-oriented initiative designed to spur a technological revolution within Africa’s agricultural sector. It seeks to identify and celebrate young agri-entrepreneurs whose innovations hold promise for transforming the continent’s agricultural landscape. Silo Africa’s innovative approach impressed the judges, earning them the runner-up position. The company provides smallholder farmers with access to digitised grain silos. This technology not only mitigates post-harvest losses, a significant challenge for African farmers, but also safeguards their livelihoods from the detrimental effects of climate change. Entering this industry takes courage, especially in a region with unique challenges and opportunities. Along this journey, you'll inevitably encounter voices of doubt—those who say you shouldn't leave a stable job, or claim Africa's agricultural landscape is simply too difficult to transform. But to achieve something remarkable, you must tune out the noise, stay focused on your vision, and let your determination speak louder than any doubts. Take inspiration from African entrepreneurs who succeeded despite skeptics. Consider Akin Alabi, founder of NairaBET, who left a secure career to build something entirely new in Nigeria’s online betting sector. Though not in agritech, his journey underscores resilience and a commitment to his vision—qualities that drive success in any disruptive field. Alabi didn’t let negativity deter him; instead, his research, persistence, and dedication led him to create jobs, opportunities, and impact. Similarly, look at Uka Eje, co-founder of ThriveAgric, an agritech platform empowering smallholder farmers through investment and technology. Facing significant challenges, Eje and his team turned criticisms into innovations that now support thousands of farmers. Thrive Agric’s achievements came not from yielding to doubts but by addressing obstacles, listening to constructive feedback, and staying focused on their mission to transform smallholder farming. As an agritech founder, you’ll encounter doubters—from colleagues to industry "experts," even well-meaning friends or family. Some may argue that Africa’s agricultural problems are too deep, funding too scarce, or that the technology landscape is too nascent. But don’t let these voices set your limits. Do your research, learn from useful feedback, and keep building toward what you know is possible. While success in agritech won’t be easy, every challenge you face and overcome will bring you closer to your goals. Ignore the naysayers, cultivate resilience, and keep moving forward. We are looking forward with establishment of strategies aligning with policies to enhance productivity which will be a good significant to our food security in our generation and generations to come (sustainable agriculture or farming). While doing this truly have an impact towards our ecosystem and rural communities in general. Sustainable farming practices at the beginning seems like are not possible to farmers level due to their education level which impact their mentality to be acquainted on technical agricultural knowledge but as we push forward this will become into reality through intergenerational starting to day. Follow the whole conversation of these lads and you will gain much more related to sustainable agriculture and it's Impacts. As long as most of the Africans countries, Agricultural remain the cornerstone of their economy, around and above 70% of population supported by agriculture. If the source of our daily income is based on agriculture at this rate, strategies towards improvement are helpful and fully demanding. Value chain of agricultural products accompanied with digital extension services are the things we as practitioners, we have to look at it firstly while pursuing sustainable agriculture and rural communities development. This let it go in parallel with competitive products on market both locally and externally. Policymakers and those who are responsible monitoring and evaluation of it specifically in agriculture, this a good job you should enjoy enough as long as we always want something on the plates which supporting our stomach. Why trade locally? Why international trade? => Because everyone needs a food. From Hoes to High-Tech: A Tale of Agricultural Transformation In the heart of the Nigerian countryside, in a small village nestled amidst sprawling fields in Eziama, Eastern Nigeria, lived young Nnanna. Like his ancestors before him, Nnanna spent his days tending to the family farm, armed with a hoe and a cutlass. The land was fertile, but the yields were modest, and the labor was arduous. Nnanna, however, had a dream. He envisioned a future where agriculture was more efficient, more sustainable, and more profitable. With the encouragement of his local agricultural extension officer, Nnanna began to explore modern farming techniques. He learned about hydroponics, a method of growing plants in nutrient-rich water solutions instead of soil. With the help of a small grant, Nnanna set up a hydroponic garden in his backyard. He experimented with various crops, adjusting the nutrient levels and water flow until he found the optimal conditions for each plant. The results were impressive. The plants grew faster, healthier, and produced higher yields than those grown in the traditional soil-based system. Inspired by his success, Nnanna decided to move to the city to pursue his agricultural ambitions on a larger scale. He found a vacant urban lot and transformed it into a thriving farm. He used innovative techniques like farming in bags, a method that allows for efficient use of space and easy management. As his farm grew, Nnanna invested in technology to further improve his operations. He implemented AI-driven systems for pest control, nutrient provision, and irrigation. These systems helped to optimize resource use, reduce waste, and ensure consistent crop quality. Nnanna's farm became a model for sustainable urban agriculture. It provided fresh, healthy produce to the local community, created jobs, and helped to reduce the city's carbon footprint. His story inspired others to embrace modern farming methods and contribute to a more food-secure and environmentally friendly future. From the humble beginnings of a village boy from Eziama with a hoe and a dream, Nnanna had become a pioneer of agricultural innovation.
