These drones allow us to cover large areas quickly and with high precision, which is crucial in the vast expanses of Monte Verde and Lomerio, covering 1.2 million hectares. 📸 Camera Trap Surveillance: We have installed camera traps strategically on the ground to monitor wildlife and detect any unauthorized human activity. Why is mangrove reforestation so important for addressing climate change? Mangroves store exponentially more carbon than tropical or temperate forests. Moreover, they prevent coastal erosion and protect against flooding from extreme weather events like cyclones. Roughly half of the world’s mangrove forests have been lost, so mangrove planting is an essential form of ecological restoration. However, mangrove reforestation is an incredibly labor-intensive and time-consuming process. How can drones help? First, drones can be used to map affected areas to analyze where seeds should be planted. Then, drones are able to drop and sow seeds much more efficiently from the air than it would take to hand-plant trees on the ground. Case study-Tracking Microbats with Ecological Australia Ecological Australia engaged Wildlife Drones to overcome the challenges of tracking microbats in Australia’s rugged and hard-to-reach terrains. Traditional methods, such as handheld antennas offer limited coverage and make tracking these highly agile creatures nearly impossible, especially in difficult locations like gorges or offshore areas. Faced with these challenges, Ecological Australia’s ecologist, Matt Elsley, turned to Wildlife Drones’ innovative drone-based telemetry system. The Imam Turki bin Abdullah Royal Nature Reserve has achieved a significant environmental milestone by reducing carbon emissions by 66% through the innovative use of drones. This initiative has also increased vegetation cover, growing from 1.4% in 2018 to 8.5% today, enhancing the reserve's rich biodiversity. Spanning over 91,500 sq. km, the reserve is home to 138 wildlife species and 179 plant species, making it a key site for conservation and ecological preservation. By deploying 40 drones, the reserve has strengthened surveillance against illegal activities like logging and overgrazing, improving environmental security and protection. This technology also supports the goals of the Saudi Green Initiative by replacing fossil fuel-powered vehicles, allowing for better access to difficult terrains, and assisting in seed distribution across vast areas. The reserve’s efforts underscore Saudi Arabia's commitment to sustainability and environmental innovation.
