💦 Why Spill Containment is Critical for Environmental Protection 💦 Spill containment is crucial for safeguarding the environment, communities, and resources. Fast, effective management prevents widespread damage across industries, from manufacturing to health care. Here’s why it matters: 🔹 Prevents Environmental Contamination – Spills of hazardous materials can contaminate soil, water, and ecosystems. Containing them early reduces widespread damage. 🔹 Protects Wildlife & Ecosystems – Even small spills harm wildlife and disrupt ecosystems. Early containment preserves biodiversity and protects sensitive areas. 🔹 Ensures Compliance & Reduces Risks – Failure to contain spills can lead to penalties and legal issues. Spill containment ensures compliance and minimises risks. 🔹 Cuts Cleanup Costs – The faster a spill is contained, the less expensive and disruptive the cleanup process becomes. 🔹 Safeguards Human Health – Toxic spills pose health risks to workers and communities. Containing them prevents exposure and ensures safety. Protecting the environment must always be a top priority for all industries. Unfortunately, accidents can and do occur, often significantly harming communities, wildlife, and natural ecosystems. As with the Walsall chemical spill last week, which resulted in the death of over 100 fish and triggered health warnings, the incident has caused considerable damage to wildlife habitats and water sources. Any site, in any industry, should have effective environmental protection measures in place. By prioritising robust environmental safeguards, industries can minimise their environmental impact and better protect the communities and ecosystems they affect. To reflect on: That maybe "not so obvious" possible source of environmental contamination. The containers containing dangerous products are not a surprise as a possible source of contamination. But the accident itself, involving the collapse of a bridge, and how these products can become an environmental problem is certainly something we don't see every day. #environment #contamination #environmentalinsurance

"Now is the time to be bold, not timid, and prioritize the health of our rivers, lakes, streams and wetlands for generations to come." One year since the Supreme Court decision that gutted the Clean Water Act, leaving our rivers, lakes, streams and wetlands at risk — as well as the drinking water for more than 40 million Americans. Alongside our partners, we are committed to ensuring that the Sackett decision does not reverse the nation's decades-long progress in securing clean water. Environmental protection is so important and so often overlooked by businesses, what is environmental protection you ask? It focuses on safeguarding the environment from pollution and degradation. It involves monitoring and controlling factors such as air quality, water quality, soil contamination, and waste management. Environmental management and protection measures aim to reduce the negative impact of human activities, emissions and hazardous materials on ecosystems, wildlife and natural resources. #EHS #safety #oneplanet #safetyguru #safetycoach

At a recent Overview & Scrutiny Committee meeting at Wealden District Council we were pleased to meet with Michael Turner from the Environment Agency who gave a detailed summary of how the Environment Agency responds to incidents in the environment. The role and responsibility of the Environment Agency is to regulate waste, protect our water sources, monitor sewage arising from our homes or businesses, and protect people from flooding. Critically, they also respond to incidents in the environment, of which 10,000 are reported per year. All too often ‘enforcement,’ which they see as a last resort, is not carried out. The Environment Agency is systematically underfunded and under resourced, so they can only attend to major (category 1 and 2) spills. They simply ignore category 3 spills, which often involve appalling levels of environmental destruction, as I have recently witnessed in my ward. I have been lobbying the Environmental officers both at Wealden and at the Environment Agency to take more decisive action. On a specific local incident, we might finally be getting somewhere. While I fully understand the need for the Environment Agency to prioritise their work load, turning a blind eye to on-going environmental destruction is unacceptable. We should be adopting the principle of “the Polluter Pays,” in that way, there would be sufficient funding to adequately enforce environmental protection laws. We need to do more. We live in a severely water stressed region. Water, once polluted, is hard to clean up and it impacts the health of all of us. Finding ways to protect Wealden from contamination is crucial if we truly want to thrive. #environmentalawareness #waterpollution #waterquality #cleanwater #wealden

The U.S. has over 3.5 million miles of rivers and streams, covering an enormous and diverse landscape. So, how is it being protected? The United States Environmental Protection Agency created the Healthy Watersheds Program to enhance the ability to protect and maintain the aquatic ecological integrity of watersheds and support habitat networks, ensuring that future generations may enjoy these resources and the social and economic benefits they provide. The EPA Program goals are as follows: Support states and tribes in their efforts to identify, protect, and maintain healthy watersheds across the United States. Further, integrate the protection of healthy watersheds into EPA Clean Water Act programs. Promote the aquatic protection component by partnering with other government, non-government, and private entities involved in landscape conservation. Increase awareness of the value of protecting healthy watersheds and improve understanding of management actions needed to avoid adverse impacts. AMS has been supporting the Alameda Countywide Clean Water Program (ACCWP), the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit holder for Alameda County, in its efforts to protect the County’s aquatic resources since the late 1990s. Over this time, AMS has conducted a wide variety of studies that have focused on different resources, management concerns, and potential environmental effects. One consistent area of focus over this time has concerned the presence of legacy contaminants in old industrial areas of Alameda County and their possible contribution to identified impairments of San Francisco Bay. AMS’ efforts in the late 1990s and early 2000s were some of the first studies that showed an ability to link elevated concentrations of legacy contaminants to individual parcels by comparing investigation results against background levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and mercury found in urban areas. Results of these investigations were used to identify a number of properties that were abated through a combination of private, local governmental, and regulatory agency efforts. AMS just completed a new round of studies that are moving this parcel-by-parcel investigation to a larger scale to assess wider swaths of our urban area. This summer, AMS conducted sampling in 44 geographic zones representing over 1,000 acres of old industrial areas in Emeryville and Oakland. For these investigations, we will again compare results across the various sampled zones to identify outliers that indicate areas that may be contributing disproportionate loads of mercury and PCBs. Analytical results are expected back in August 2024 and follow-up actions will be determined at that time.
