Did you know, that today is the International Day for Biodiversity! 💚 🌱 Biodiversity is instrumental to maintaining healthy forest growth and ensuring the vitality of our business. That is why we at UPM are committed to climate-positive forestry and promoting biodiversity in all our operations. Our biodiversity actions are divided into three categories: 🌲 forest management ✋ conservation 🤝 projects and collaboration In each category, progress is monitored through carefully selected biodiversity indicators. You can find the indicators and follow the journey on ➡️ https://lnkd.in/dfCT-n-8 #upm #upmtimber #biodiversity

Harmony’s Senior Environmental Manager, Nivashni Govender was selected to participate as a panellist at the 4th Business Advisory Group on Biodiversity. Hosted in collaboration with the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE), South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI), and Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT) on 2 December, the forum focused on strengthening business engagement in biodiversity conservation. With our first Biodiversity Footprint completed alongside EWT, we’re laying the foundation for meaningful conservation impact. “At Harmony, we're committed to becoming Nature Positive by deeply understanding our biodiversity impacts and creating an action-driven roadmap towards no net loss and ultimately positive impacts,” said Dr Urishanie Govender, Chief Sustainability Officer. https://lnkd.in/dpt7TpBu #miningwithpurpose

As #WorldRainforestDay is fast approaching, we reflect on our efforts to take care of rainforests worldwide 🌍🌳 When we nurture all forests, we tackle the worst effects of climate change and prevent biodiversity loss, a task that we have been committed to for the past 30 years. Our efforts towards responsible forestry have not been in vain, and have translated into successful biodiversity preservation stories: 🐆 Mayan Biosphere Reserve of Guatemala – There are up to 11.28 jaguars per 100 km²: the highest reported values of the species in the country. 🌿 Madre de Dios reserve in Perú - There are 135 registered species in the FSC-certified area, including 17 key species tracked for their importance to this ecosystem. 🐘 Congo Basin – FSC-certified concessions harbor 2.7 times more large mammals than non-certified areas. The time is now: 2024 is the year of action. Join us and @worldrainforestday in our mission to preserve the rainforests, and all the biodiversity that depend on them. We should #ActNow to do the following nature based solutions (NbS) to fight climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution (triple planetary crisis). 1. Rating and ranking of the top plant species of the world, on the basis of their capacity to provide food to the animal biodiversity as well as on the basis of their capacity to reduce greenhouse gases and pollution from the atmosphere, inducing rainfall and reducing atmospheric temperature. 2. Design the best plant portfolio (plant community or plant assemblage) for agriculture and forestry for maximising the synergistic effect of plant biodiversity. 3. Design the best landscape for forestry and agriculture, for maximising the ecosystem level biodiversity and maximising the edge effect on biodiversity.

🌍 FSC Certification Boosts Biodiversity in African Logging Concessions 🌍 A new study, published in Nature, shows that FSC-certified forests in Africa support higher populations of large mammals, including elephants, gorillas, and chimpanzees. Through sustainable forest management, these areas reduce threats like hunting and habitat degradation. The study highlights FSC certification as a key tool for balancing timber production and wildlife conservation, advocating for its global adoption. Choosing FSC-certified timber helps protect biodiversity and ecosystems while fostering responsible forestry practices. #Sustainability #FSC #Biodiversity #Conservation #Forestry #Timber #ForestPact

Building trust in carbon markets is key to stopping deforestation 🌴 Our Chief Scientist Ed Mitchard, and Elitsa Marinova joined the Investments in Forestry & Biodiversity (IFB) conference in Singapore. Ed spoke on a panel about the need for stronger integrity in VCMs to unlock funding for forest protection and restoration across Southeast Asia and the tropics. At Space Intelligence, we’re on a mission to improve trust in carbon markets by creating high-quality maps of forest cover, deforestation, and forest carbon. These maps ensure carbon credits represent real reductions in emissions - either by protecting existing forests or growing new ones. The more confidence we build in VCM impact, the more financing we can drive toward protecting biodiversity and stopping climate change. #IFBSingapore #Deforestation #VCM #CarbonCredits
