The Supreme Court's decision to overturn Chevron will affect children with disabilities. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is a law which demands an equal education for people with disabilities. Until now, the Department of Education had the right to interpret any ambiguous sections within reason. Now, judges will have the final say concerning how exactly IDEA should apply to students with disabilities. The Vocational Rehabilitation Act establishes VR agencies through the Department of Labor. VR helps people with disabilities find employment and achieve their goals through funding college degrees, vocational training programs, independence training centers, and providing valuable assistive technology. These are only some of the things VR is meant to do to help us. Again, now that Chevron has been overturned, either the Department of Labor or the EEOC has lost the ability to interpret any ambiguous passages without judicial intervention. This means that judges will have the final say as to how IDEA and the Vocational Rehabilitation Act should apply to people with disabilities. Again, do you trust judges, most of whom know nothing about our needs, to interpret the law correctly? #IDEA #DOE #Scotus #EEOC #VR #DisabilityRights

We intended for this to go out last week, but, well, when you have a team of people with disabilities, sometimes best plans can go awry and you pick priorities. :) For our fourth post about National Disability Employment Awareness Month, and the fourth way we prioritize accessibility at Sticky Brain Studios is by valuing the insights of our disabled team members. Having team members with different disabilities and diverse accessibility needs motivates us to create more accessible products. Most of our production team is certified in accessibility design, which helps us ensure more people can enjoy our games with fewer barriers. Accessibility features we're planning for our upcoming game, Rooster, include: - Image descriptions so players with visual impairments can use screen readers to interpret visual aspects of the game. - Options to skip sensitive, emotional content and challenging gameplay because we want everyone to have the opportunity to progress in Rooster's journey despite emotional and cognitive challenges. - Alternate game control options to ensure players can adapt gameplay for their comfort and unique motor skill needs. We'll keep you updated on more ways we're making Rooster accessible as we prepare for its 2025 release. In the meantime, you can try out the Rooster Demo on Steam and let us know what you think. #GamesAccessibility #AccessibilityInGames #AccessibilityAtWork #DisabilityInclusion #NDEAM Image Description: Dark text on a white background says: "Working with people with disabilities means Sticky Brain can design more accessible products." The Sticky Brain Studios logo is in the bottom left corner above the hashtag: "#NationalDisabilityEmploymentAwarenessMonth" To resemble the Disability Pride flag: The top left corner of the image is framed by muted black, red and yellow lines and muted black, green and blue lines frame the bottom right.

This is What Change Looks Like: Making Gaming More Accessible Disability isn’t created by impairments but by society’s failure to accommodate diverse needs—whether through inaccessible spaces, communication barriers, or rigid work practices. It’s up to governments and companies to systematically remove these barriers and foster true inclusion and equality for disabled people. That’s why we must applaud Microsoft and Microsoft Xbox Series X for making gaming more accessible through the Adaptive Joystick. I would love to see more businesses follow suit and invest in ensuring their products are fully accessible. Because everyone deserves to be part of this world. #InclusionMatters #Accessibility #Disability #EDI #BreakingBarriers

What do I know about computer games? What's new or trending? Its from the adventure genre. Its narrative driven with believable characters and storyline in a comic book presentation. Its non-linear because the story can be usurped by the choices you make. You mean its interactive? I do. Those choices have real emotional impact. You mean its immersive? Absolutely, the story moves in both flashbacks and flashforwards; you can even control the dialogue. I know jts an adaptable X box computer game called "As Dusk Falls." It could be ,except there are now many games of this type. This time its called "As dawn breaks." I can play "As Dusk Falls" with either one, three or remotely with seven others. "You can play "As Dawn breaks" with any number but 150 is a useful average for a community that interacts. In "As Dusk Falls" you play a character. In "As dawn breaks" you are the character. In the game it's a job to survive. In our campaign you can fail, survive or thrive or a mix of all these to get that job that you want. The Disability Resilience Network would like to gamify our campaign "Future jobs = future disability inclusion" described in the last blog. Through the game we want to provide supported decision making to disabled people and those with long-term health conditions aiming to gain the new jobs by 2030. We also wish to support the recruiters in these industries in making inclusive decisions in design be it the design of a job or a new workplace. Some of this is already happening. There are experts in game design such as the team of four working in Melbourne gamifying the decision making of disabled people in creating an accessible city. Our ambition is to include the power to influence those decisions. Game designers and writers please invite us to your next ideation or hackathon events. "As dawn breaks" doesn't yet exist. One of the readers of this blog will change this.

I Design discrimination intentionally, Looking at the social disability model and how language is people centered; how can I as a designer offer insights in a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Virtual Reality (VR) training. First and foremost, research is my best friend. While I have my own unique experience and insights into the world of as disabled person, I know that there are many intersectional characteristics of disability as a whole that I have no idea about. My team had been tasked in designing a project that is a short immersive experience where the user embodies a wheelchair user, with the sole goal of experiencing bias and discrimination. Where the user can reflect upon their interpretation of events within a simulated discussion. The best order to start is research, this not only fills in gaps of your knowledge, it also can offer insights to preconceived ideas and thoughts on the topic. As I know very little about the wheelchair user experience or community, it is important to reach out to people who have these lived experiences to get their perspectives and concurrent themes that show up in an everyday interaction for them. This project started with creating some dialogue scripts that gets passed through a few different design peeps, that we then pass back to our friendly and helpful community folk. This is one of the most important steps as we not only are looking at ensuring that our dialogue is not reductive of their lived experiences, to commodify them, or make the characters seem so unlikely that is seems too unrealistic. There is something interesting about creating something that is intended to be spoken problematically, or to speak ill fully of certain people. It really makes me feel passionate about the reason why we’re making these scenarios. The disillusion that the world and society really doesn’t treat everyone equally is truly upsetting to my personal core values. But in order to really ensure that our users can be reflective in our immersive experiences we have to consider and design these uncomfortable situations. Being intentional in our language, be intentional in our tone, our setting and pacing. Then to also consider how we want our users to interact with the experience, are they registering bias, are they making a choice in what your character will say, or are you choosing to interact at all? I had a lot of fun--challenge, creating for this project and directing parts of the experience. It’s still in development, soon it will be in beta external in the next two months*. But I wanted to reflect on the experience and how it’s shaped me as an inclusive design specialist. I think the most meaningful moments that I’ve had thus far is getting the feedback on our dialogue scripts. Unfortunately, they were very realistic. While as a designer this is great to hear, but as a person it hurt. So, I will continue to design discrimination intentionally.

I’m passionate about creating a world where everyone, regardless of their abilities, can thrive. Disability inclusion is not just a necessity but a celebration of our diverse human potential. Innovative solutions are the key to breaking down barriers and ensuring that everyone can participate fully in society. One of the most transformative areas is assistive technology. Speech recognition software and screen readers have revolutionized how individuals with disabilities interact with the digital world. These tools enable those with mobility and visual impairments to communicate, learn, and work independently, opening up new possibilities for personal and professional growth. Inclusive design in architecture and urban planning is another critical innovation. By incorporating universal design principles, we can create spaces that are accessible to all. This includes features like ramps, wide doorways, and sensor-based navigation aids. Such thoughtful design ensures that public spaces are welcoming and usable for everyone, fostering a more inclusive community. Wondering when our policy makers will start ensuring that spaces are welcoming and usable for people with limited mobility? Lastly, digital inclusion through accessible websites and adaptive gaming is making the online world more inclusive. By following guidelines like the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), we ensure that digital content is accessible to everyone. Adaptive gaming allows individuals with various disabilities to enjoy and participate in the digital entertainment world, promoting social interaction and enjoyment. Together, these innovative solutions pave the way for a more inclusive society where everyone can contribute and succeed. As we continue to innovate and collaborate, I am confident that we can create a world where disability inclusion is the norm, not the exception. #inclusion #oluwayemisiadekunle #plwd #thisability
