Here's GameDiscoverCo's list of 'trending' unreleased Steam games, Sep. 16th-23rd, 2024*. Some notes, ignoring the ubiquitous Deadlock: - Fun Dog's 'co-op tactical survival horror shooter' Forever Winter is still surging (#2), ahead of its release tomorrow. - Like A Dragon: Pirate Yakuza In Hawaii (#5) is getting people very excited, after its surprise announce. - It's niche, but hardcore sim Sea Power: Naval Combat in the Missile Age (#12) picked up a bunch of interest after announcing a November Early Access release. You'll also see just-launching titles like Tiny Glade (#10) and Witchfire (#13) on this list - this is the last day they can appear, since they release today! Subscribers to the GameDiscoverCo Plus 'basic' data tier can access this data daily here - https://lnkd.in/gYJ-Z3_2 - including sorting by tag, release status, etc. (*Ranked by new Steam followers in the last 7 days.)

3 new games from me about 'Operation Market Garden', the Allied plan to seize key bridges through the Netherlands and over the Rhine at Arnhem by American, Polish and British paratroopers in September 1944. The first game in 'OMG' is ‘Take that Bridge’, a simple exploration of fire and manoeuvre tactics of taking and crossing a bridge over the Wilhemina canal south of Eindhoven by a company of the US 101st Airborne Division, defended by an unknown number of German soldiers that are revealed as the game progresses. There is a countdown before the bridge is blown! The second and third games explore the actions at Nijmegen (US 82nd Airborne and XXX Corps) and Arnhem (1st British Airborne). These are based on the historical scenarios, and a series of counterfactual battles exploring alternative actions. Both ‘504 PIR’ (Nijmegen) & ‘Every Man an Emperor’ (Arnhem) use a novel mapping and combat system. Counters represent company level units fighting use a new combat system of duelling dice and solo attacks tied to a game time that matches the attrition rate seen in the real battles. The games can be found on this link. https://lnkd.in/ehr8fCFr https://lnkd.in/ef8Pxc7e

Having gone down a rabbit hole of Rennaissance Mediterranean naval warfare and structural social and economic reasons for different strategic approaches to naval warfare which also impact ship and force design as well as tactical doctrine of the various factions, I have come to ponder about objectives and incentives in wargame design, here specifically on the campaign level. Objectives and incentives in wargames isn't a new topic and lots has been said about the screwed perspective introduced by metrics of success, such as victory points and take that hill objectives when it comes to determining success within simulations, which pose an actual educational threat in that they condition practitioners to focus on aspects which usually are of little relevance under real world conditions. Abstracting radical contingency, uncertainty and complexity of reality with numbers and yes/no evaluations is a fool's errant, causing game-end-charge syndrom and other weirdness. If we look at the Mediterranean in the 16th century without a modernist "Mahonian" conception of naval warfare, we'll quickly realize that control over the sea wasn't something any of the powers had the means nor the interest to achieve. Major battles, even those of most devastating outcomes, had little impact, as many "players" could easily replenish whole fleets within a certain timeframe (yes, there were of course long-, mid- and short-term consequences, but neither Preveza nor Lepanto were "decisive" outside the propagandistic imagination). Now, from an educational perspective, I don't want to push players' noses on what they are supposed to do (the game should allow them to make informed decisions and take alternative approaches anyway), I am looking for them to understand the structural conditions of the scenario by operating within the synthetic game world, and then define the objectives on their own (which many casual gamers might find quite irritating, games teach them that winning means destroying the enemy or sitting on a certain piece of terrain, no matter whether their force would be anihilated as a consequence). Additional hints of strategic importance might guide them onto the right path, but which turn to take should be up to them, so that they can fail gloriously, learn from it and adapt. But how to tell who won, then? Professional games usually aren't played to win, as the actual objective of the exercise is to learn, analyze or explore a given subject. How successful that might potentially have been can be evaluated by subject matter experts, if at all reasonable. But if I don't have any at hand or if the game is played in a less professionalized context, potentially by enthusiasts, some sort of call might have to be made. Or you simply decide not to. I should probably create a website to keep track of all my projects and give space for some structured thoughts on various aspects, shouldn't I ...? Yay for #wargaming ramblings.

Updated the demo version of my game (set to release on Steam in July) The demo includes 3 playable levels so playtime should be pretty short. I am open to ideas/suggestions/feedback from anyone willing to give it Balance is still ongoing so I wouldn't try too hard to 3 star all the levels (it may not even be possible) https://lnkd.in/gPAS7GQC
