This company is a scam and should be put under every microscope of the government. Andy should be arrested using the RICO charge and the company should be dismantled and turned into a not-for-profit focused truly on the patients they cover and not a group of overly wealthy shareholders. It makes me sick to think this company can legally get away with all they do on a daily basis and then spend MILLIONS of your premiums, not on your care, but rather a campaign about what a good company they are by protecting you, to death, literally. Every UnitedHealth Group insurance member should drop them and find insurance through a not-for-profit insurer. They won’t always be better, but at least you’re not padding the pockets of those killing you.
“We are deeply saddened and shocked at the passing of our dear friend and colleague Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare. Brian was a highly respected colleague and friend to all who worked with him. We are working closely with the New York Police Department and ask for your patience and understanding during this difficult time. Our hearts go out to Brian’s family and all who were close to him.”

I grieve for Brian Thompson's family and the UnitedHealthcare family. The sick tributes and comments in the aftermath speak to the many issues in our health care economy, namely the restrictions of a free market, and the separation between consumers and producers. UnitedHealthcare is an extremely successful company for two reasons. First, they do a great job of erecting barriers to paying claims and the claimants are not paying the bulk of premiums, but rather paying for services. And so UnitedHealthcare's model is like a discount airline's-- low fares, paid by employers, and extremely high baggage fees, paid by employees. And so the second reason UnitedHealthcare is successful is because they are cheap. Employers want low prices and cheap coverage, as opposed to employer-of-choice programs that take care of families. God bless Brian Thompson and his family, but perhaps this matter can stimulate introspection among the business community to think of employee health as care, and not a cost, and for voters to demand from Congress, free market reform. I hope this is a pivot to new models of health care.
