Here’s something you don’t see every day – the enormous electrical service required to power a hospital from the transformer – in this case, three 3,000 AMP transformers. In the picture on the right, the Putzel team is installing (36) 4” conduits into two electrical duct banks. (The team made sure they could continue to work during a rainstorm and installed the brown tarp for cover.) Putzel would like to give recognition to General Contractor at Brasfield & Gorrie who made the narrow, below-grade space safe for our team to work in. On the left side of the photo is a concrete retaining wall and, on the right, the side of the excavation is engineered for safety with soil pins and shotcrete. The photo on the left shows the other side of the retaining wall. The conduit goes through a blocked-out space in the retaining wall into this three-branched configuration. Each individual branch will connect to a 3,000 AMP transformer -- this area will collectively be the utility yard for the Energy Plant. The complexity of this electrical infrastructure scope shows Putzel’s capacity for a wide range of project complexity. We currently have a team of 12 on this project.

This technical article covers numerous substation project design elements, lists the steps of the construction process, and examines the environmental impacts and impact mitigation strategies for power transmission and distribution substation projects. Most projects suffer due to lack of capability of the project proponent and an inept mindset among its engineers and designers that extensive inclusion of environmental mitigation measures in the project design leads to very high construction and O&M costs in the long-run. At the planning stage itself, land availability is one of the main factors that govern the establishment of a substation project. This involves a contiguous piece of land that can infringe upon scarce populated/forest/cultivated land. Keep reading https://lnkd.in/dNauDZjS
