"Feature releases are often delayed." "The development cycle is just too long." "The development timelines are not adhered to." As a growth-stage B2B SaaS company, these are the comments you don't want to hear. Earlier, you were able to release features quickly. Now, every small change seems to take 2x–4x the time, if not more. You are wondering why this is happening. Why now, just when you are ready to hit the pedal and speed up? Some factors contributing to the slowdown: 𝘍𝘭𝘢𝘬𝘺 design. 𝘛𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘭𝘦𝘥 code. 𝘓𝘢𝘤𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 documentation. 𝘋𝘪𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘴𝘩𝘦𝘥 product skills. 𝘌𝘹𝘤𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘷𝘦 configurations. 𝘈𝘥𝘥𝘦𝘥 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬𝘧𝘭𝘰𝘸𝘴 for new verticals. 𝘔𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘪-𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮 support. 𝘋𝘦𝘷𝘪𝘤𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺 checks. 𝘚𝘦𝘤𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦 needed. 𝘋𝘦𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘴𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 challenges. 𝘈𝘤𝘤𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺 checks pending. 𝘐𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 certifications required. 𝘚𝘭𝘰𝘸 processes. 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘹 deployments. 𝘌𝘹𝘱𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘥 teams. 𝘗𝘰𝘰𝘳 onboarding. All of the above seem necessary. Many of the steps can't be avoided. 𝗡𝗼𝘄, 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗼? Some tips from my past engagements: ↔️ 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄 the processes for bottlenecks. ↔️ 𝗘𝗺𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗲 product increments to set expectations. ↔️ 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄 tech inefficiencies. ↔️ 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲 technical debt. ↔️ 𝗘𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 processes are lightweight. ↔️ 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 agile practices to shorten release cycles. ↔️ 𝗔𝗱𝗼𝗽𝘁 code quality tools to reduce QA cycles. ↔️ 𝗔𝗱𝗼𝗽𝘁 continuous integration and delivery (CI/CD) pipelines. ↔️ 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 testing and validations. ↔️ 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁 retrospectives to ensure we are improving. ↔️ 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲 timelines to customers. ↔️ 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲 regular updates to customers. There's no magic wand to suddenly increase velocity and quality. It needs integration into the strategy and roadmap. At the end, all that matters is customer satisfaction, and it needs the highest focus. What are other tips to improve release velocity? ------ 🎤 I’m Prashantha, Fractional CTO for B2B SaaS companies ($20M-$50M). 🚀 I specialize in breaking through tech bottlenecks and spearheading your business for long-term growth. 🗓 Let’s set up a discovery call if your tech is holding you back from scaling.

In world of software development, success often comes down to understanding both the tech side and the bigger picture of business goals. As developers and managers, it's crucial to connect the dots between our technical skills and the needs of the business. Recently, I found myself in a situation where business folks and tech leaders were working hard to explain the main problem they were facing. It made me realize how important it is to communicate and collaborate effectively between tech and non-tech teams. Here are some key lessons I learned from this experience: 1. Facilitate Collaborative Discussions: Organize brainstorming sessions involving both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Foster an environment where diverse viewpoints are valued and actively listened to. 2. Ask the Right Questions (Probing Questions): Talk to business stakeholders to really understand what they need. Asking the right questions can help clarify things and spark new ideas. examples : -What specific challenges or pain points are you currently experiencing in your operations? -Can you provide an example of a recent situation where this problem had a significant impact on the business? -How do you envision this problem being solved or addressed? -What are the potential consequences if this problem is not addressed? -Are there any specific metrics or key performance indicators (KPIs) that are being affected by this problem? 3. Help Articulate the Problem: Offer support to business people and managers in articulating the business problem. 4. Give Examples: Share real examples to show how to map business problems to tech solutions. It helps paint a clearer picture for everyone involved. 5. Create Visual Aids: Use diagrams, charts, or mockups to illustrate key concepts and make complex ideas more accessible. Visual representations can help clarify relationships and potential solutions. 5. Iterate and Refine: Recognize that understanding complex problems may require multiple iterations and ongoing refinement. Stay patient and persistent in your efforts to clarify the problem and ensure alignment among stakeholders. by fostering open discussions, we can bridge the gap between tech and business perspectives.
