💡 Our buildings account for 4️⃣0️⃣% of global energy-related greenhouse gas emissions, and older buildings are the main culprit. In the #EU, buildings built before 1945 leak 5 times more energy than modern ones. In our NEW #COGITO Blog, Takeshi MIYAMORI, Ji-Soo YOON and Sunniva Giske draw on the findings of the new OECD - OCDE Global Survey on Buildings and Climate. 🔎 Key findings 🔹 Construction contributes 5% to 10% of energy consumption in developed countries and up to 30% in developing countries. 🔹 88% of cities and regions surveyed support higher energy efficiency standards than national counterparts. 🔹 86% of cities and regions have their own plans or strategies for emissions reduction. Representatives from 70 countries unanimously adopted the Declaration de Chaillot, signifying a collective commitment to decarbonize within the building sector. According to a report released by UNEP and GlobalABC, the building accounted for 37% of global operational energy and CO2 emissions, this shows how important it is to act in this sector. The declaration outlines a series of commitments by ministers. It includes the implementation of regulatory frameworks, financial incentives, and sustainable materials to align with the Paris Agreement's goals. This highlights that France and 70 other governments will now make effort to decarbonize the building sector and this is a big step forward against climate change. UNEP and the GlobalABC released 'The Global Status Report for Buildings and Construction' which provides an annual snapshot of the progress of the buildings and construction sector on a global scale. The Buildings-GSR reviews the status of policies, finance, technologies, and solutions to monitor whether the sector is aligned with the Paris Agreement goals. The buildings and construction sector contributes significantly to global climate change accounts for about 21 per cent of global GHG emissions. In 2022, buildings were responsible for 34 per cent global energy demand and 37 per cent of energy and process-related carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. The report finds a significant gap between the current state and the desired decarbonisation path and notes that to align with the 2030 milestone, an annual increase of ten decarbonisation points is now required. #buildings #decarbonisation

🌿 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 #Sustainability: 𝗠𝗘𝗣𝘀 𝗗𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗧𝗼𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗭𝗲𝗿𝗼-𝗘𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 🏛 MEPs have adopted plans to decarbonize the building sector, aiming for zero-emission new buildings by 2030 and climate neutrality by 2050. Here's a breakdown: 🔹 New buildings to be zero-emission from 2030, with public buildings leading the way by 2028 🔹 Emissions-reduction targets set for residential and non-residential buildings, aiming for significant reductions by 2030 and beyond 🔹 Solar installations to be progressively deployed in public, non-residential, and all new residential buildings by 2030 🔹 Phasing out fossil fuel boilers by 2040, with subsidies for stand-alone boilers prohibited as of 2025 🔹 Financial incentives for hybrid heating systems incorporating #renewableenergy 🌍 This directive aligns with the European #GreenDeal, tackling 36% of Europe’s #CO2emissions while addressing energy poverty and creating local jobs. ❓Do you believe these initiatives from the EU Parliament indicate the right direction, or are they merely complicating matters for the economy and EU member states, potentially leading to decreased competitiveness? Will we breach the 1.5°C threshold by 2038 or 2059? The building sector stands at a critical juncture, poised to either exacerbate or mitigate our climate crisis. The urgency of our decisions cannot be overstated. The decisions we make today holds the power to either hasten climate catastrophe or lead us toward a sustainable future. Our built environment can either deepen the climate crisis or become a model of resilience—what future will we choose? Excited to share our latest report, "The Relentless CO₂ Emission from the Building Sector is Becoming a Stumbling Block in the Fight Against Global Warming and Climate Change," where we delve into the critical role our industry plays in global emissions and the transformative changes required to meet Net Zero targets by 2050. With the building sector responsible for 37% of global CO₂ emissions, our study highlights the urgent need for sustainable practices, innovative technologies, and a shift towards renewable energy. Key insights include: · The building sector's contribution to operational (27%) and embodied (10%) emissions. · A projected 52.33% increase in new construction spaces driven by urbanization by 2050. · A pivotal transition is underway, with a projected 49.5% reduction in fossil fuel use and an increase in renewable energy production from 7 trillion kWh to 22 trillion kWh by 2050. · Despite significant efforts to reduce emissions, the building sector is poised to deplete its carbon budget for a 1.5°C scenario by 2059, and in a business-as-usual scenario, by 2038. Let's redefine buildings as beacons of resilience and innovation, turning the sector into a leader in global climate action. What does it mean for a new or existing building to be net zero in the UK? This important question should now be a lot easier to answer. A pilot version of the UK's first cross-industry standard for defining a net zero carbon building has just been launched by a cross-industry group led by the UK Green Building Council (UKGBC). We’re sure at Cura that this is welcome news right across the sector. Up until now there has been no single agreed definition of what constitutes a net zero building. This means that many buildings are being described as net zero based on different frameworks, standards and targets. It’s up to building industry professionals to then interpret the information in these documents for their clients. This new pilot standard should help bring clarity to the meaning of ‘net zero’ and is applicable to both existing and new buildings. It covers ALL the UK's major building sectors, providing a clear set of requirements for buildings to be classified as Net Zero Carbon Aligned. It also provides information on how to evidence and report net zero claims. As a vendor of smart energy and building solutions designed to help support decarbonisation in the UK, and a supplier of energy submetering for tracking energy usage, we’re fascinated to see how this pilot develops. 🔗 You can download the standard from the UK NZC Buildings Standard website: https://lnkd.in/eqZm4Ni4 #EnergyEfficiency #Sustainability #BuildingAutomation #NZCBuildings #NetZero #GreenBuildings
