Part of the challenge of starting Fort Wayne's first climbing gym is teaching people what climbing is. The first thing that comes to mind is the tall walls with a harness and rope. We're a bouldering gym, so we have the tall walls, just no gear. Arguably scarier. Summit City Climbing Co is willing to take on the challenge with climbing classes! Here's what they offer: 👶 Kids’ Classes: Engage your little ones with fun and safe climbing activities. 👧 Teen Sessions: Tailored challenges to build confidence and strength. 👩 Women-Only Classes: Empowerment through climbing in a supportive environment. 👨🏫 Intro to Climbing: Master the basics, understand different holds, and discover routes that suit your level. During these classes, not only will you learn the fundamental techniques of climbing, but you'll also find the perfect routes tailored just for you. 👉 Limited Spots Available! Sign up now on our website and kickstart your climbing adventure with us.

You never know how your little ideas might ripple into something so much bigger. When I was a teenager with a tech background and an obsessive passion for talking about mogul skiing, watching mogul skiing, reading about mogul skiing, writing about mogul skiing, and skiing moguls, I wanted somewhere online to share that passion. This was before the prevalence of social media. So I started a phpBB forum and built a website dedicated to mogul skiing. It was a humble thing, really, nothing special. But no other such resources existed at the time. Gradually, more and more fellow mogul enthusiasts discovered the forum, and the conversations were flowing. One day a discussion came up about having a mogul skiing meetup at the bump mecca of the world: Mary Jane (at Winter Park, CO). And thus was born "Bumpapalooza." I had nothing to do with envisioning or proposing the event. That credit all goes to Jeff and Bryan from the forum. And yet, that little hairbrained idea I had of making an internet forum for the most niche thing in the world had been the platform for the event to arise. Earlier this week, I joined for a day of the 17th Annual Bumpapalooza (picture is from this past Monday). 17th annual. That's hard to believe. Anywhere from 20 - 80 mogul skiers--from folks new to the sport to retired World Cup skiers, from kids to 70+ year olds, skiers from all over the country and beyond--join in at some point over the 3-4 day event to enjoy the sport they love, offer each other some pointers, push themselves to the max, and kick back with a couple beers and socialize. This event isn't changing the world. It isn't innovating the next "big thing." But it means something. It has forged deep and lasting friendships. It brings together friends, old and new, to share in this common passion (obsession, really). And it's showcasing mogul skiing to everyone who skis at Winter Park during those few days. And now, with the forum long-retired, a Facebook group with more than 2,000 members has taken its place. Pretty cool genesis from a teenager's whim. Whatever your little idea is, go for it. It might not change the world. But it might brighten some people's lives.

My capstone project should have been epic… but we failed. We designed a backcountry skiing ascender device—a portable gas-powered motor with a wheel to pull you up a fixed rope. It would have totally changed how we approached backcountry skiing. But we made one critical mistake: our wheel was too aggressive. The first time we tested it, the rope got completely bound up, and all the gears were destroyed. We never even got to test the device properly. The irony? The guy we were designing for already had a device that worked—and he was using it in the Crazy Mountains in Montana. Fast forward to today: I live in the Crazy Mountains, and I still wish I had one of those devices to get more ski laps in! Looking back, I realize life leaves clues. What seemed like a failed project back then now feels like a small part of a much bigger story. The connections between past experiences and where you end up are often clearer in hindsight. How did your capstone project turn out? Share your story.
