We had an exciting day with our Grade 9 students during Bring Your Kid to Work Day, where they learned how to use science and engineering to tackle environmental challenges. The students experienced both an in-person and a virtual-reality tour of Savron Solutions Smoldering Systems and Fire Laboratory, as well as a visit to SiREM’s Laboratory and bioaugmentation culture production facility. They also took part in Canadian Operation’s Idea Generator, a brainstorming session focused on applying innovation and technical excellence to our work. We are eager to see how these budding scientists and engineers shape our future!

Our Rector, Juan Francisco Sifontes, explores the exceptional skills our Doers bring to building meaningful change. Discover how “The DO Generation” drives an innovative approach that combines holistic learning, power skills development, and highly employable careers while integrating practical experiences and community projects. This blog shows the vision to inspire the next generation of engineers to become change makers, as our Rector shares with us, "A new generation of engineers who make engineering an aspirational profession, an engineering with purpose." We invite you to read it at the following link: https://lnkd.in/e_Ag4AaF

A thought to finish the year on: A scientist’s mission is to analyze, understand, and explain 100% of an experiment—a noble task which sometimes never finishes. An engineer’s role is different: to find the 1% of the science that drives 99% of the experiment and assess whether the remaining 1% will cause a problem. Skilfully making this balance is what sets apart the good from the great engineers of our times.

The world today faces many significant challenges, across a broad set of dimensions; from societal to political to environmental, to just name a few... And daily we are inundated with troublesome news regarding these challenges. However, I remain an optimist! First, because I believe in the power of science and second because I believe in the power of youth. As you can see below, when these two come together, awesomeness ensues 😀 At Thermo Fisher Scientific we are proud supporters of both.
Help us congratulate the winners of the Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge! 13-year-old Tina Jin from San Jose, CA won the $25,000 top award for her research on an accessible and scalable water filtration system made from natural materials and common household items. The 30 finalists who competed at the Thermo Fisher JIC, a program of Society for Science, are among the nation’s brightest students—with several, including Tina, collectively accepting more than $100,000 in prizes at an award ceremony in Washington, D.C. 📢 Project updates 📢 Two weeks ago in #Delft, we have presented the progress made in the first two months of the Task 1.2 in the MULTICLIMACT Project. As CMCC Foundation - Centro Euro Mediterraneo sui Cambiamenti Climatici, we are leading this task, which involves ten partners with diverse technical experience. Our objective is to develop quantifiable key performance indicators #KPIs to analyze natural #hazards (flooding, heatwaves, droughts, and earthquakes), #exposures, and #vulnerabilities in the #built #environment. Furthermore, we are investigating key performance indicators #KPIs to assess the #resilience of the built environment and the effectiveness of design interventions in terms of #economic and #digital resilience. The endeavor is extremely challenging because we must include many built-environment systems (building, urban, infrastructure, territory, cultural heritage, and people), four distinct natural hazards, three scales and potential consequences among the different system. Thanks to the excellent technical and research experiences of each project partner involved in the current task, we will develop a #MULTICLIMACT toolkit assessment framework that, in the future, will assist local decision-makers in the planning and design phases to understand the "AS IS" condition and to test the increase of the resilience of the built environment. We are excited to show the outcomes of this cutting-edge toolset assessment approach in the coming months. After three days full of exchanging on the progress, visions and next steps of #MULTICLIMACT at our first General Assembly in Delft, we all travelled back home safely, motivated to continue working on this unique project! ✨ Many thanks again to Delft University of Technology for the great organization and hosting! 🙌 Together, we're committed to safeguarding Europe's built environment! 🌱 🌍

📌 Thrilled to be working and enjoying our time in #Delft as part of this incredible consortium 🤝. 🌱 The MULTICLIMACT Project 🇪🇺 is pushing boundaries in technology and sustainability, dedicated to 🛡️ safeguarding Europe’s built environment against the increasing threats of natural and climatic hazards. Through innovative strategies tested across four pilot sites with diverse climatic conditions, MULTICLIMACT Project targets the urgent need for adaptive measures against floods, earthquakes, extreme weather conditions and heatwaves. Recently, we had the opportunity to present our work and engage in enriching discussions with our esteemed partners. Huge thanks to all involved, especially to Delft University of Technology -Juan Pablo Aguilar López for hosting, RINA (Clemente Fuggini, Susanna Penko) for coordinating, Università Politecnica delle Marche - Gloria Cosoli and Callisia - Dipartimento di Ingegneria dell'Informazione UNIVPM for their invaluable contributions to and the submission of a new article to IEEE.
