🚨 The advance of lithium mining threatens 26 new salt flats in Chile, raising environmental and social concerns. Lithium mining in these areas depletes water, irreversibly damages ecosystems, causes biodiversity loss, and harms rural and Indigenous communities that ancestrally inhabit the territory. 📢 The severe ecological and social impacts must not be ignored. 👉 Click the link to learn more. #JustTransition #IndigenousRights #IndigenousPeoples #Environment #HumanRights #Sustainability #ClimateJustice #Chile

"Without a clear-eyed scientific understanding of impacts and risks - the world's oceans are too fragile to turn into a speculative experiment." A solution that endangers native biodiversity is not a sustainable solution. We shouldn't let fear and misinformation keep us from leveraging opportunities, deep sea mining is a unique case. A precautionary approach is warranted. The countries of the #BluePacific may do well to build additional safeguard mechanisms to complement international agreements during this period. #DeepSeaMining #SIDs #SmallIslands #Decarbonization #ClimateChange #CEIP

#DeepSeaMining has no place in a sustainable future: it is unnecessary, economically unsound, and environmentally destructive. Contrary to industry arguments, deep-sea mining threatens fragile and critical ecosystems on the ocean floor, which play a vital role in the planet's biodiversity and climate systems. Its financial viability is undercut, and overall is an unsustainable gamble. Dan Kammen, Victor Vescovo and Jeanne Everett debunk the false narrative that this destructive mining industry is essential for the Green Economy transition. Instead of risking one of our planet's last untouched frontiers, the experts call for a commitment to preserving one of Earth's last untouched environments. https://lnkd.in/ghyV76Xb #DefendTheDeep

Nearly 180,000 gorillas, chimpanzees and bonobos — more than a third of the entire great ape population in Africa — could be directly or indirectly threatened by mining now and in the near future. Mining of transition metals poses a tricky balancing act between biodiversity conservation and climate action, both of which are urgent issues. “A rapid increase in demand for metals for renewable energy … could lead to mining of marginal or unconventional resources, which are often in more remote or biodiverse places,” says ISF Elsa Dominish. "Guardians of the Earth: How Indigenous Peoples can teach the world to safeguard and conserve biodiversity For hundreds of years, Indigenous Peoples around the world have held integral roles as protectors of their surrounding territories, environment and resources. While representing less than 5 per cent of the world’s population, Indigenous Peoples steward more than a quarter of Earth’s land and seas and protect 80 per cent of global biodiversity. Despite this, Indigenous Peoples have not been recognised for their vital role as stewards and custodians of the natural world. Thankfully, the tide is turning and these lessons are being transferred into collaborative projects between Indigenous Peoples and mining companies". Really interesting study shedding light on the impact of the mining industry on biodiversity. Key takeaways include: - 8% of vertebrates are exposed to Mineral Extraction Threats. - Mineral exploration caused 78% of protected area downgrading, downsizing, or degazettement events between 2000 and 2018. - Growth in the industry is driven by the increasing demand for minerals for technology, building, and the climate transition. - Emphasizes the importance of understanding the impact on biodiversity to comprehend the full environmental and climate implications. Plenty more insights available in the paper, highly recommend giving it a read! #MiningIndustry #BiodiversityImpact #DoubleMateriality Vian Sharif Nick Hough-Robbins Chris Hartshorn Craig Hamilton Jasper Hajonides Liesl van de Vyver Blackman Read more:
