This week I had the pleasure of being keynote speaker in FINI's 9'th International Conference on the Development of Industrial Engineering. The focus this year was to address the green transition. My presentation "Building on a culture of innovation to address the transition towards net-zero" has been developed with examples from the Energy industry. My ambition is to inspire sustainability professionals across industries by sharing "Circular oilfield practices" and examples of collaboration. It will hopefully create awareness of organizations strengths and illustrate potential paths into more sustainable operating models. How to approach LCA and S-LCA in order to find the most sustainable solutions

Last May, Anne Ottenbros from our project partner Radboud University presented a scientific poster at the SETAC Europe 34th Annual Meeting in Sevilla. This year's meeting theme, “Science-based Solutions in Times of Crisis: Integrating Science and Policy for Environmental Challenges,” emphasised the urgent need for innovative, science-based solutions to the most pressing environmental issues such as food production. Anne’s poster titled “Forging a greener future: How the INITIATE technology can help decarbonise steel and fertiliser industry” focused on the innovative solutions explored by the INITIATE project to reduce the carbon footprint of steel and fertiliser production. Decarbonising the steel and fertiliser industries is crucial for achieving net-zero climate goals, as these sectors contribute 8% and 0.93% of global GHG emissions, respectively. In an operational environment, INITIATE will show how residual carbon-rich gas from the steel sector becomes a valuable feedstock for the chemical sector. At the same time, the cost of carbon capture is sustained, leading to a cost-efficient decarbonisation strategy. The TRL7 demonstration will combine the continuous production of N₂+H₂ and CO₂ streams, with the innovative ammonia production as a precursor for urea. A prospective life cycle assessment (pLCA) demonstrates the environmental benefits, particularly when powered by renewable electricity. The event is in-person (not hybrid). Register for the event https://lnkd.in/eq6cxnsK This workshop aims to explore with stakeholders the policy landscape for the EBNet community, especially the drivers and incentives for carbon offsetting technologies. How do we define such technologies? What is the methodological landscape for carbon footprint calculators? How are calculated carbon footprints verified? Here, we will focus on ISO14064-65 on greenhouse gas validation and verification methodologies. We will also study the overlap and distinction between life cycle assessment (ISO14040-44) and greenhouse gas validation and verification methodologies (ISO14064-65), with the latter being the methodological backbone for the carbon offsetting schemes. After discussing the LCA and greenhouse gases validation and verification methodologies, we will focus on the UK’s Green Gas Support Scheme in the context of biomethane injection into the gas grid. The models developed so far in the AI4AD project (https://lnkd.in/exGPv3NA) will be disseminated. These models are for GWP standardisation and techno-economic analysis. We’ll demonstrate the uses of various software platforms. The key players in the field must join to contribute to developing a better understanding of the policy landscape and how organic waste processing industries can benefit from the UK and global regulatory systems.
