Weekend read 📚 Sustainable Cooling Handbook for Cities by UN Environment Programme Today, some 56% of the world's population (4.4 billion inhabitants) live in cities With growing populations – predominantly in the tropics – and rapid urbanization, the impact of global warming is felt most acutely in cities. Research shows that the world’s cities are heating up at twice the global average rate due to the urban heat island effect, which will increase the demand of in buildings cooling and increase energy consumption. This UNEP report presents a comprehensive overview of sustainable urban cooling approaches, incorporating intervention strategies and supporting case studies that can be readily implemented at the city or district level in developed and developing countries. more information:https://lnkd.in/ebRjB5tc #sustainable #urbanization #research #climatechange #cooling #hvac #sustainability #infrastructure #buildings #construction #cities #energy #electricity #impact #future #sdgs #sustainabledevelopment

🌍 The Mediterranean is particularly affected by the environmental, energy and climate crisis. Within our region, the climate is warning 20% faster than global trends. The acceleration of climate change impacts has exacerbated the already critical situation of the Mediterranean basin, caused by population growth, rapid urbanization, declining biodiversity, changes in land use, as well as economic and social challenges. 🔸 Faced with these cumulative challenges, the first edition of the Union for the Mediterranean 'Mediterranean Green Week' taking place this week in Istanbul (Türkiye) underlines the urgent need for collective action and new ambition for regional and local cooperation to make possible the sustainable transition in the Mediterranean. Within the framework of the theme “Towards a greener and more resilient Mediterranean”, panelists insists on the need to move towards a decarbonized, energy-efficient economy, mitigate and adapt to the effects of climate change, and safeguard the unique ecological diversity of the region. 🔸 Experts highlight that fossil fuel emissions accelerate climate change, food production is energy intensive, energy generation impacts and depends on natural resources, climate change disrupts energy production. On the other hand, renewable energy sources reduce reliance on fossil fuels and lowers greenhouse gas emissions, sustainable management of ecosystems empowering local stakeholders and the development of a green circular economy can provide jobs. 🎯 This first edition of the 'Mediterranean Green Week' on energy, environment and climate action aims to bring together governments, businesses, civil society, youth, scientists, and more to break down barriers and work collaboratively on climate, water, environment, soils, forests, biodiversity, seas, energy, and economic transition. #MedGreenWeek #UfM4Sustainability #resilientMediterranean #greenerMediterranean #Mediterranean #Mediterraneancooperation #medconnet #shapingthefutureoftheMediterranean #unitedbytheMediterranean #greeneconomy #blueeconomy #WeAreASCAME #ASCAMEprojects #ASCAMEactionplan2024

What to learn from Hong Kong's efforts to make mobility more sustainable: I’m excited to share a new article in which Imke Wouters and I spoke to Jacob C Kam, CEO of MTR Corporation Limited 香港鐵路有限公司, Hong Kong’s public transit provider, on how Hong Kong’s mass transit system can get more sustainable. Hong Kong ranks as the world’s top public transit network in our latest Urban Mobility Readiness Index, accounting for a whopping 71% of distance traveled, yet it isn’t on track to meet its Paris Agreement goals of limiting global warming to 1.5°C because it relies on a carbon-intensive energy grid, according to an Oliver Wyman Forum analysis of urban mobility emissions. In the article, we talk about how both creative, short-term tech solutions and longer-term green financing can help decarbonize Hong Kong. Read the article for more on the next steps for Hong Kong’s mobility network, the biggest challenges faced, as well as what other cities can learn from Hong Kong.

These Natural Resilience case studies show various pathways to embedding natural systems into projects - making a case for utilising the millennia of infrastructure design iterations through which nature has evolved far more advanced systems than our own 🌍
Natural Resilience As the UN Environment Programme meetings and negotiations at #COP16 on #Biodiversity draw to a close on Cali, Colombia, the global call to action to move from a time of nature loss to a nature positive future have never been louder or more urgent. We need to restore the natural world's resilience, but also to work with nature to make our society and economy more resilient. It can seem overwhelming, but we have seen real successes that can be replicated. I am really proud to share a series of exceptional thought leadership articles from my colleagues around the world, including insights, successful case studies and much, much more.
