I come across a fair number of startup pitches. One thing that always catches my eye is when founders dive straight into full-on sales mode. Look, I get it, fundraising is on the agenda, but let's not overlook the bigger picture here. Early investors? They're not just check-writers. They're your backstage crew, offering not just cash but connections and know-how that can make or break your startup journey. But here's the thing: it's a two-way street. To make this partnership truly sing, you've got to be open about where you need help. I have a huge amount of respect for founders. Fundraising is tough. But don't just settle for anyone waving a check. Seek out partners who bring more to the table than money – partners who genuinely get what you're building and can help you get there faster. One of the most valuable things I’ve gained from building partnerships and community is outsider perspective on my business: When you’re running a business, it can be easy, at least for me, to get tunnel vision and lose sight of the bigger picture. Meeting with supportive, like-minded people creates the necessary space to: - Reflect on what’s working and what’s not - Reconnect with your long-term goals - Evaluate whether you’re prioritizing the right things For startups, making time for new insights (from the right people) is so important. When you’re heads down in the day-to-day and without a full team to support you yet, taking the time to connect, gain perspective, and refocus can make all the difference in staying on track to achieve your goals.
