We are proud to have worked with the National Theatre on the new National Theatre Green Store, which opened in South Bermondsey in September 2024. This game-changing facility has been developed to inspire designers at the early stages of the production process to reuse existing materials, whilst encouraging them to achieve their creative goals and adhere to the standards of the Theatre Green Book. By encouraging reuse, the NT is working to create a circular economy and reduce its carbon footprint. The 36,000 sq. ft facility brings together the National Theatre’s storage of costumes, props and recyclable scenery under one roof, making it a one-stop-shop for hire to the creative industries. We provided full MEP design to stage 3 and supervised the project through to completion. Environmental highlights include: 🌍 Minimised energy consumption in storage and racking zones through deployed lighting control systems. ☀️ Renewable energy with a 20kW photovoltaic array on the warehouse roof, harnessing solar energy to power the facility. 🚛🔋 Support for electric vehicles via EV charging points, facilitating the use of electric trucks for transporting props. 😌 Enhanced comfort through a new heating and air handling system fitted in the warehouse, designed to support future ASHP’s. 🌞 Improved natural daylighting provided by skylights. 🌬️Passive cooling through new skylights and louvered vents. The Role of UGR in Indoor Lighting Navigating the world of indoor lighting design, the Unified Glare Rating (UGR) emerges as a pivotal standard set by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN and CENELEC). This measure evaluates the glare emitted by indoor lighting and its effect on our visual comfort. The UGR scale, featuring values like 10, 13, 16, and up to 31, simplifies glare assessment—the lower the UGR, the lesser the perceived glare, enhancing comfort for everyone in the space. Here’s a quick breakdown: values below 19 are typically considered low glare, suitable for detailed tasks; mid-range values around 22 to 25 are acceptable for general activities; anything above 28 can cause discomfort, affecting productivity and well-being. At PBLC Lighting, our engineering and design practices are aligned with achieving optimal UGR values. This approach not only meets but exceeds the standard requirements, enhancing the visual environment and contributing to the wellbeing and productivity of the users. For those intrigued by how lighting can transform indoor spaces into more comfortable and functional environments, turn to PBLC Lighting Company Lighting for cutting-edge solutions and expert insights. We specialize in illumination design, a term that describes aspects much broader than the standard overhead electric lighting system. Illumination also includes direct natural light, indirect natural light, indirect artificial light and reflected light, as well as the control of all light sources. In most facilities the illumination levels are a key component to successful outcomes. Our work and research confirms there are optimal lighting levels and that appropriate lighting improves performance. Thus a primary function of lighting/illumination design is to plan for the most effective illumination in relation to each space to enhance visual comfort and productivity. We also recognize that Energy standards, such as LEED certification and ASHRAE-IES building energy targets, must be addressed in the design. Utilizing lighting design to reduce total lighting loads while still supporting a productive, pleasing, and safe environment is an integral aspect of a successful environment. #LightingDesign #LEED #IlluminationDesign

We used to design buildings like energy was free. In the 1980s and 90s, every building was “good enough”. But nowadays, we know energy’s not free. And people living in those old buildings are paying for that design approach. When buildings aren’t well insulated — with good windows, walls and doors — they become climate-killing money pits. So what do we do about these old buildings? Those climate-killing money pits? Knock them down? No. That comes with its own carbon emissions (both embedded and operational). Instead, we should be looking more often at #deepenergyretrofit. Deep energy retrofit can keep the building’s bones and give it a new skin. We’re talking about … → Better insulation → Heat efficient airflow systems → Energy efficient lighting → HVAC systems → Airtight windows and doors You can have all that, WITHOUT tearing it down and creating a new structure from scratch. With modern #facadesystems, and more attention paid to the building envelope as a whole, we can take our existing, 20th-century building stock … And still get 21st-century thermal performance. With equally comfortable living conditions, whether it's hot or cold outside. (Or both on the same day!) Plus — if the project calls for it — you can put a more appealing facade on top. Giving these buildings a new look … And a new lease on life. P.S. I was on a stage not too long ago, sharing my expertise in #deepenergyretrofit. The building science nerd in me loves this stuff 🤓 I love getting pulled into these kinds of projects. It’s fun to be part of something so important.
