As a CPO the CFO should be a best buddy. We’re both wired to favour rational, evidence-based investment decisions. At one former employer of mine, the CFO, as custodian of the asset register, was all too acutely aware of how many HiPPO decisions he had had to write off . But the language we use can alienate even such kindred spirits. Much like lawyers, doctors and IT folks, we product people have created arcane language to demonstrate how clever we must be. But unlike the other 3 whose jargon might be precise or efficient, we are clever precisely when we sound most simple. Our job is to communicate and engage, so fancy language that is exclusionary does the exact opposite of justifying our inflated salaries. We must communicate with words that resonate with people and that they understand. So what springs to mind when your hear the word “discovery”? That expensive phase when consultants charge you for borrowing your watch and telling you the time? Those very long journeys where the sailors all got scurvy? Are those the associations you want? At last night’s Mind the Product event Sally Crimes did an excellent job explaining why the word “discovery” is unhelpful. In her world the word “validated” sat much better with people. Randy Silver echo’d this with a story of how one CPO worked in a business filled with M&A types, and so her use of the term “due diligence” was the automagical unlock on making discovery normal. My personal preference is to think in terms of risk as I think businesses, and CFOs and investors in particular, love that. Talking about risk is one of my hobby horses as not enough product people seem to realise that underpins our approach. The reason why we do discovery and experimentation and MVP etc is to de-risk things, and to reduce the known unknowns, and to ensure that our investment is commensurate with our confidence levels. It is also why if little uncertainty actually exists, we do NOT need to even bother with discovery etc. Our job is not to teach the organisation UER skills or do self-indulgent produxplaining. The job is to get the job done. And to do that, listen for what language your company uses and mirror that. #productmanagement

When they say "𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻'𝘁"...... 𝘛𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘶𝘦𝘭. That is the ROCKET fuel. To respond..... "𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗺𝗲." Do NOT let other people's perceptions of what you are or are not capable of deflate or flatten your goals. If you want another 100K, another 1 mil. If you want that title, or a seat on ExCo 𝘰𝘳 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 "𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘭𝘪𝘦𝘳𝘦" 𝘴𝘦𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘌𝘖. Nose down, 𝗴𝗼 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝘁. Do NOT let "you can't" impact how YOU perceive what YOU are capable of. Do NOT let discouragement sneak in and get a (firm) seat at YOUR table. You are unstoppable. The only difference between you & person sitting in the seat you want⤵️ they believed in themselves (𝘵𝘰 𝘢𝘯 𝘢𝘭𝘮𝘰𝘴𝘵 𝘥𝘦𝘭𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘭𝘦𝘷𝘦l) when other's insisted "you can't", and you have not shifted that mindset... 𝙮𝙚𝙩. (see how I did that? 😉 go back and read my post on the word YET my friend) You need to 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗶𝘁. And ideally to work with a coach who won't let you slip from that belief, 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘖𝘕𝘌 𝘴𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘥. 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩, 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩. Amateur coach or consultant: Do yUo WaNt a FrEe AuDit?? A few weeks ago I onboarded a consultant from Chicago We started working together because he was frustrated with attracting only low-quality clients. He’d been giving away free audits and detailed reports. And was spending hundreds of hours a month chasing prospects with little to no success. I forced him to stop immediately. Instead, we switched our focus from sharing freebies to sharing insights. Within one week, everything changed. His wasted hours dropped by 90%, and he started attracting clients willing to pay 3x more. Because he started positioning himself differently. Fast-forward today: Now he’s getting rid of all his low-quality, cheap clients and working only 3 or 4 hours a day with his big whales clients and making 35k /mo. That’s the difference between an amateur and PRO. Rethink your positioning and start attracting whales willing to pay top dollar for your services.

When we were kids, we were always asked, "What do you want to be when you grow up? "I want to be a teacher." "I want to be a doctor." "I want to be a lawyer." "I want to be a nurse." "I want to be an engineer." "I want to be an accountant." But did anyone ever answer, "I want to be a CEO!!! Well, I've realized that it's just a phase of life, because as children, we only think about who we want to become, not who we'll be 30 years from now. Sorry, I can't remember the exact year when the thought of becoming a CEO crossed my mind. All I know is that in every interview when they asked me, "How do you see yourself 5 years from now?
