We can see a lot of injustice, cruelty and indifference to suffering in the world. What good deed can we do today, which brings zero personal glory or acknowledgement to us? What if not even the person you're doing the good deed to never knows you're the good samaritan? What if doing the good deed is payment enough itself? I would argue it's often better for the person to deeply consider the impact of the good deed rather than the specific good samaritan. In this example Kennedy recalls stealing a mango out of desperate hunger and a man coming along to help him, so now he helps many others, even though he doesn't know the name of this other man. Ancient wisdom teaches that our left hand shouldn't know what the right hand is doing, when it comes to good deeds. This means we ought not focus on our good deeds because we may become conceited and do them for the wrong reasons. Rather it should become something in our lives which is so fluid we don't think of it anymore than putting on our seatbelt. So today, instead of being consumed with political candidates or even paying a bill, consider what you might be able to do to help one other person, even if it's just a kind word.

This video of one person helping another and the ripple effect it has in the world reminded me of some research on what makes people happy. Researchers found that if you do just these three things every day, then you will find happiness wherever you are. Here are all three: 1. Learn 2. Initiate 3. Help At the end of each day ask yourself: 1. What did I Learn today? 2. What did I initiate today? 3. Who did I help today? We have agency over our own happiness. If you’re unhappy and think an external job change is the answer, try to integrate these theee things first, you may find that the job isn’t quite as bad as you first believed.

What ripple are you going to create today?

The push and the pull. There is this narrative that technology and social media are to blame for our mental health epidemic. Sorry. That’s too easy. Let’s look again. Yes. Tech and the social media it facilitates can and does cause problems. There is a ‘pull’ toward the instant and compelling nature of what the digital world offers. But why are we and our children disconnecting? What is the ‘push’ from the world that means they escape somewhere else in their minds? Until we are ready to even ask what is driving everyone into their phones and devices, we won’t resolve the issue. It’s too easy to simply blame the pull. We would have to look critically at the quality of what modern life has to offer in order to look at the push factors - and we wouldn’t want to do that would we?!

We recognise the technical expertise our partners have and create opportunities for them to become “consultants” or accompanier of other partners. 2. #Learningexchanges: we have also curated physical or online learning spaces for our partners to share their success experiences on a particular matter, for example #agroecology. We recognise that the opportunities for expanding this are infinite and as varied as our partners seek. In the near future, we might share some of this on “learning episodes” - watch the space! 3. #Outcomeharvesting: We have started the journey of incorporating outcome harvesting as a way for partners to capture their learning and to hear more prominently about the change they see and its importance in the context. 4. #learningbydoing: Do this in partnership and you will see it really works. We have seen amazing #innovation from our partners with ideas at a very early stage and a balance between accompaniment and flexibility has been key for the success of the approach.
