So I was born in the UK but because the British had changed the laws, you do not acquire British citizenship at birth. This is in 1984. So I was deemed and non citizen and so when my family returned to Zimbabwe as only one year, eight months in my mum's passport, it was declared I am also not a citizen of Zimbabwe. So you know, one of the things is I know I was Born Free. But again, it's just the world's telling me who I could be. And the world's told me I did not belong. I did not belong in the UK, the country of my birth. I did not belong in Zimbabwe, the country of my ancestry. So my story starts off with I don't belong. Wow. Or you can belong everywhere. I guess that's someone and that This is why I have you in my life. Sandra's house.

Ich helfe Trauernden, wieder das Lebenswerte am Leben zu finden | I support people in grief to find again what is worth living | Website: kathrin-benkenstein.com | Instagram: trauer_kultur
Grief is not the topic you would expect in a podcast about expats who start a new life in a foreign country. Grief is not the topic that people would expect in an informal conversation with a colleague, in a small talk with a neighbor or at a dinner party with friends. But why⁉️ It doesn’t really make sense because grief is a topic that everyone will encounter sooner or later. However, even though grief is an „everyday“ topic, it is not talked about daily, sometimes not even monthly or yearly.
Grief is often associated with the death of a loved one. But people grief for various reasons, not only when a person died. Grief comes with divorce or separation, end of a long friendship, job loss, loss of home, move to another country (e.g. as an expat), miscarriage, loss of health, unfulfilled life dreams, and many more. Have you already experienced one or more of these things? I would guess that everyone of us make experiences like these during our lives. But we rarely talk about them… 🤐
I want to give grief a voice and openly talk about it. Due to my own personal story, I want to support people in grief and help them along their grief journey. 🧡
Thank you so much, Evelina Rimkute, for talking about grief with me and for giving it a voice!

🎤🎧 New talk on Footprints of an Expat podcast with Kathrin Benkenstein 💥
🌍Journey: Germany -> Switzerland ->Germany
In this podcast episode, I had a great chat with Kathrin Benkenstein. She helps people cope with difficult times like losing someone special. We talked about different things like living in Switzerland and Germany, making friends while studying or working, and how families stick together during tough times.
👉 Tips from Kathrin that can help you along the way:
- Stay authentic and show your willingness to integrate
- Do not stay in your expat community, get to know local people and their culture
- If you experience tragedies in your life, seek for help, better sooner than later
