In this third installment of our series, we explore the fascinating evolution of our initiative and how "Skillinabox" got its name, reflecting our mission and vision perfectly. Initially, our project was named "Tool-o-kit," where we developed products designed to teach children about technology. While distributing these kits in a local community for free, an insightful comment from a mother sparked a transformative idea. They noted, "This box has skills—this is skill in a box!" That moment of clarity made us realize the potential impact of our efforts and led to a pivotal rebranding. The name "Skillinabox" not only resonated with our goal to encapsulate essential skills within a box but also aligned seamlessly with our broader vision. This name change marked a significant milestone in our journey, enhancing our identity and reinforcing our commitment to empower communities. Stay tuned for the next part of our story, where we will delve into how "Skillinabox" transitioned from focusing on technological education for children to fostering women entrepreneurship, broadening our impact and reach. Last week I delivered the first live event for twopointzero, The Bigger Picture, supporting creatives from marginalised communities in navigating the complexities of commercial work. I was joined by a lineup of speakers for whom I have immense respect and admiration. Lu Bowan, Lydia Raghavan, Shamil Tanna Through twopointzero, I draw on my extensive experience in the inclusion space, to forge social mobility in the arts and advertising, giving everybody the same chances to do well in life regardless of the socio-economic background (SEB) of their parents. Our panel of speakers, all proudly from working-class backgrounds, shared their experiences and insights, creating much-needed visible representation and illuminating career pathways for a new wave of emerging creatives. By showcasing the successes and journeys of these individuals, we hope to inspire and empower those from similar backgrounds to pursue their creative ambitions, thereby driving lasting social equity in the creative sector. Social mobility in advertising is vital for fostering creativity in the UK. By opening the doors to those from low socioeconomic backgrounds, like myself, we unlock untapped talent and enrich the creative landscape. This inclusion not only benefits the creative industries but also ensures that art and culture reflects the broad spectrum of society. My ambitions are big! I’m interested in connecting with individuals who also strive to create lasting social impact. Let’s talk if that is you. #SocialMobility #InclusiveAdvertising #AdvertisingWithPurpose

At Testlio, our purpose is to enable human possibilities. Yes, we test software and deliver great results for our clients, but we believe there’s a bigger role for companies today. It’s about taking responsibility—not just for the work we do, but for the world we’re helping to shape. Creating a more inclusive, diverse tech landscape is part of that for us. Our founder, Kristel, is especially passionate about supporting women in tech. She knows that real innovation happens when different voices are heard and valued. This commitment to inclusion and impact drove Kristel’s recent Fireside Chat with Bukky, founder of Female Techpreneur at She Is Tech 2.0 virtual conference. They explored what it means to close the gender gap in tech, the unique challenges faced by women, and the critical steps we can take toward a more inclusive industry. When everyone’s included, we build stronger teams, create better products, and open up new possibilities for everyone. Here are some points that were discussed: 🔑 Women in Leadership: Only 18% of leadership roles are held by women, and just 3% of venture capital goes to female founders. We need to close this gap because diverse voices build resilient, innovative solutions—whether they’re leading a testing team or a tech startup. 🚀 Strategies for Success: * Stay true to your vision, even when challenges arise. * Celebrate small wins and seize every new opportunity. * Lead by example. Whether guiding a product launch or executing tests, our actions inspire others to raise the bar. 💡 Barriers & Challenges: From investor bias to the pressures of parenthood, women in tech face unique challenges. Confidence struggles, imposter syndrome, and societal biases can hold women back from fully realizing their potential. These obstacles aren’t unique to startups; they impact the entire industry. Breaking down these barriers is key to creating high-performing, inclusive teams that drive progress. 🧠 Skills for the Future: Building problem-solving and adaptability skills is essential for anyone looking to thrive in tech. Financial literacy and networking are also critical for making strategic, impactful decisions—whether you’re an entrepreneur, engineer, or QA professional. When we lift each other up, we create better solutions for all. What’s one way you think companies can better support women in tech? 🤔 #womenintech #softwaretesting #softwaretester #softwarequality

⭐️ Building Girls In Tech RDU: A Product Manager’s Approach ⭐️ As a Product Manager, my core mission is to identify user needs and craft impactful solutions 💡. When co-founding the Girls In Tech RDU Networking Group, I applied the same structured, user-focused approach to create a community that truly resonates. 🔍 The Process: ✅ Understanding the User Through user research, I connected with women in tech across RDU to understand their experiences and challenges with existing tech networking opportunities. Key insights included: -A lack of in-person, women-focused tech groups in RDU. -High costs of attendance discouraging participation. -Formal events limiting genuine networking time. ✅ Analyzing the Market I conducted market research to explore existing women-focused tech groups, their offerings, and engagement strategies. This analysis helped me shape a unique value proposition for Girls In Tech RDU, ensuring we stood apart by addressing unmet needs. ✅ Defining the Vision The vision for Girls In Tech RDU was clear: create a low-cost, high-value networking experience for women in tech, tailored to the RDU area. ✅ Prioritizing Features Key elements of the event design included: -Location: A woman-owned venue, reinforcing the focus on supporting women across sectors. -Cost: Free registration to eliminate barriers. -Time: A convenient 6–8 PM slot for professionals. -Event Format: Casual, floating networking, maximizing authentic conversations. -Marketing: A compelling, inviting campaign through social media (LinkedIn, Facebook) to attract the right audience. ✅ Product Launch Our inaugural event was met with overwhelming success. Attendees loved the low-cost, women-centered environment and expressed a strong desire to return. We collected feedback through post-event surveys to continue refining future experiences and improve engagement. ✅ Continuous Growth We’re committed to evolving Girls In Tech RDU by continuously listening to our “users” and delivering experiences that resonate. It’s been an incredibly fulfilling journey to apply my PM expertise to empower women in tech in the RDU area 😌 Become a member of our Facebook Group today, to know about our future events: https://lnkd.in/ecMyhdA6 #ProductManagement #PMLife #ProductManager #Tech #Innovation #WomenInTech #Product #GirlsInTechRDU #OpenToWork

Sharing your story ≠ Bragging When I first started sharing my experiences online, I felt really uncomfortable. Questions kept running through my mind, like: ➤ Why would anyone care? ➤ Is it even necessary? ➤ And honestly, so what? It took time for me to get comfortable with the idea. Eventually, I realized something important: 𝑺𝒉𝒂𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒔𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒚 𝒊𝒔𝒏’𝒕 𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒚𝒐𝒖; 𝒊𝒕’𝒔 𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒐𝒏𝒆 𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒐𝒏 𝒘𝒉𝒐 𝒎𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕 𝒃𝒆 𝒊𝒏𝒔𝒑𝒊𝒓𝒆𝒅 𝒃𝒚 𝒊𝒕. This thought encourages me to keep sharing. My own ambitions have been shaped by the stories of others, and I know how powerful it can be. In fact, I’ve had the urge to quit university quite a number of times. As much as people don’t believe me when I say this, it’s been challenging in ways I didn’t expect. But seeing and reading about others’ experiences has fueled my ambition to push forward and pursue my dreams. Their stories gave me the motivation to keep going when I doubted myself. I believe my journey is important, and it’s something I want to share with others. If it can inspire or help even one person, then it’s worth sharing. If you feel hesitant to share, I want to say this: ➤ Your experiences, no matter how big or small, matter. ➤ You never know who might be struggling with the same challenges or dreaming of the same goals. ➤ Your story could be the push they need to take action or believe in themselves. Sharing your journey doesn’t mean you’re bragging; it means you’re contributing. You’re adding your voice to a collective of stories that can uplift and empower others. Don’t underestimate the impact your words and experiences can have. Don’t hold back. Own your story, and let it shape not only your path but the paths of others too. #shapeyourstory #shareyourstory __________________________________________ 📸: speaking as a new #womenintech ambassador at Clusity 🌱 the #womenintech community launch event.
