What difference can an unorthodox funder make to a project for healthier futures in #Africa? It's a "complete game-changer," said NGFP 2020 Fellow Tolullah Oni, founder of the social enterprise UrbanBetter. UrbanBetter is an Africa-led & Africa-focused platform for learning, research and advocacy for more sustainable, and healthier cities fit for all generations. It recently received significant funding from Unorthodox Philanthropy, a partner of NGFP. Strategic relationships with partners like Unorthodox Philanthropy are key because they help close the gap in emergent insights that are needed in the futures and foresight sector. Young foresight practitioners are on the cutting edge, and they bring out interesting and impactful ideas that can influence policies and drivers of change today. 🚨 Research note of the WEEK! 🚨 Cross-border Philanthropy Tracking: Promises and Limitations of Administrative Data 📄 An understudied aspect of research surrounding cross-border philanthropy regards the transfers between organizations in one country to those in a second in a way demonstrating scope but which also provides details about the characteristics of the flow. Big data may be one such way to help track this information. The authors design a study that aims to capture flows of cross-border philanthropy focusing on remittances from the US to Israel. ✒ Authors: Jamie Levine Daniel – NYU Robert F. Youth alliances, when empowered and organized, can be formidable forces for positive change in today's world. By leveraging our energy, creativity, and passion, we can drive impactful initiatives across various domains. One of the most effective strategies for youth alliances is to engage in #advocacy and policy change. Through lobbying, petition drives, and public hearings, we can influence decision-makers and advocate for issues that matter to us. Additionally, community engagement and mobilization are crucial for creating lasting change. By organizing grassroots projects, volunteering, and conducting awareness campaigns, youth alliances can address local challenges and foster a sense of community. Last week, I mentioned I'd be attending the United Nations People-Centered Justice Regional Conference on "Achieving Just Societies: Inclusive Justice Pathways for People and Planet in Asia and the Pacific," and what an inspiring and challenging few days it's been. had the privilege of sharing This Life's journey in transforming justice systems in Cambodia, both on the innovation panel and during intimate world cafe sessions. The numbers speak for themselves: we've reduced recidivism from 60% to less than 2% through our holistic approach to justice reform. Our Child-Friendly Spaces program has supported 64 mothers and more than 200 children both inside and outside prison walls. Notably, we established Cambodia's first-ever juvenile diversion program, working with hundreds of children to create alternatives to custodial sentences - proving that community-based solutions aren't just possible, they're more effective. Where there were zero diversion cases in Cambodia before, we've now created a pathway that's being adopted across multiple provinces. But here's the paradox that emerged clearly during the financing session: while we talk about scaling proven solutions, funding often chases new pilots rather than supporting the expansion of evidence-based programs already working on the ground. The shift toward funding startups, while important for innovation, shouldn't come at the expense of scaling proven community-driven initiatives. To my new connections from the conference (including the brilliant minds from TDRI, IJRS, LexisNexis, and Yunus Thailand) - thank you for the rich discussions on building stronger justice innovation ecosystems in Southeast Asia. You've reinforced my belief that solutions exist; they just need the right support to scale. A call to action for philanthropists and funders in this space: let's move beyond the pilot phase. We have proven models that work - programs that have transformed lives and systems. What we need now is strategic, long-term funding to take these solutions to scale. Communities know what works. The evidence is clear. The frameworks for success exist. The question now is: who will step up to help take these proven solutions to the next level? #JusticeInnovation #PeopleCenteredJustice #SocialImpact #Cambodia #SDG16 #SystemsChange Looking to learn more about evidence-based justice reform? Let's connect. The lives of countless families hang in the balance, and the solutions are ready to scale.
