This week members of our curatorial team attended the Museums Association conference 2024: the joy of museums at the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds. We got to hear about all of the exciting work taking place across the museum sector and came back feeling very inspired about how we can apply this learning to Craven Museum! Thanks to the MA for bringing together museums from across the country to share ideas and talk all things museums.

How are museums dealing with today’s challenges of public debate and political pressure? NEMO - Network of European Museum Organisations encourages all museum professionals in Europe to participate in a survey on this important topic.
📢 Since starting work on the NEMO European Museum Conference theme “Can we talk? Museums facing #polarisation”, we have realised its importance and complexity. Some organisations are hesitant to publicly discuss their experiences with polarising opinions and political pressure. 📋 To understand the extent of #political influence on #European #museums, we welcome you to contribute to an anonymous questionnaire. The results will feed into the discussions at the conference and help us get an overview of how museums are dealing with politically charged situations. ⏰📆Deadline: 6 September 2024 Learn more and access the questionnaire 👇

Since the Museum Data Service (MDS) launched in September, we've added a million object records, bringing the total to 4,232,398 records from 44 collection datasets (90 Accredited museums). In the current Museums Journal, Michael Hardy praises the simple layout of the MDS website and hails the service as 'a huge step in the right direction for UK museums [which] opens up many possibilities for museum professionals to work collaboratively in the future.' The more museums involved, the more useful MDS becomes for everyone. So make 2025 the year your museum gets on board. It's free and easy, as you can see from this quick video guide.

The lighting alone is worth seeing. Only light gives colors and illuminated objects the right meaning and emphasis. Lighting of course remains the central element as always.

This insightful piece on the evolving role of museums captures the essence of how these institutions have remained relevant and even grown in prominence. Far from becoming outdated, museums are continually reinventing themselves—from embracing digital technologies to creating more inclusive narratives that address historical debates and social justice issues. The shift from exclusive spaces for the elite to democratic venues that engage broader, more diverse audiences reflects how museums are in tune with contemporary values. They are no longer just houses of art and history, but dynamic platforms that spark dialogue on everything from gender representation to the restitution of cultural heritage. Blockbuster exhibitions and record visitor numbers highlight how in-person museum experiences offer something screens cannot replicate: the authenticity of being in the presence of history and art, of encountering artifacts and masterpieces that hold cultural and emotional weight. These spaces, both physical and intellectual, continue to offer unique, transformative experiences that resonate deeply with the public. It’s clear that as long as museums continue to adapt and innovate, they will not only maintain their relevance but further solidify their role as cultural powerhouses in a rapidly changing world. #MuseumInnovation #CulturalHeritage #CuratorialPractice #VisitorExperience #eminscomment #eminspost #eminmuseum #talktothemuseum
🤔💭 Who still visits museums? You might be surprised but the number of museum-goers has been steadily rising over the years. While today’s technology offers a virtual glimpse into masterpieces, museums remain vibrant spaces for people to connect with the past. There’s something special about wandering through their halls. Many museums believe they're good listeners. They run surveys, hold focus groups, gather feedback. But here's the paradox: Like the 80% of drivers who rate themselves "above average," museums often overestimate their listening capabilities. In our latest Progress Report article, Rosie Siemer breaks down why traditional research methods reinforce institutional assumptions rather than revealing what communities actually need—and what museums can do about it. I couldn't agree more with the points shared by Antonio and Manuel on his article linked by Ji. Richardson. Simply translating exhibit texts isn’t enough to create true inclusivity. As Antonio mentioned, genuine accessibility requires ongoing dialogue with the community, not just checking a box. Museums thrive when they collaborate with their communities beyond their physical walls, creating meaningful connections that lead to greater support and impact. This approach feels essential for the future of museums. What are your thoughts on how cultural institutions can engage more deeply with their audiences? #MuseumAccessibility #CommunityEngagement #InclusivityInMuseums #CulturalDialogue #MuseumInnovation
The Spanish-speaking population in Chicago is roughly 29%, but museums have rarely represented these communities. We spoke to the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago team about their work to make the their institution "fully bilingual".
