Farmers aren’t always thrilled when closure activities come to their land. It’s often met with frustration and genuine concern about what’s ahead. This fall, I drove a couple of hours out of my way to meet with a landowner. We sat at their kitchen table for hours, discussing upcoming work on their site. These conversations are rarely easy, and they don’t often lead to the outcomes you might hope for. Someone asked me recently, “Why do you go through the trouble?” My answer is simple: to build trust. I can’t control how someone reacts, but I can make the effort to listen. During that conversation, we moved from business to personal topics, eventually discovering a shared connection—an author we both happened to know personally. He didn’t have the author’s book, so I sent him a copy afterward. We didn’t walk away with a clear business solution, but we did walk away with mutual respect and a little more trust. Sometimes, that’s where progress begins.

Why Do We Fail? I find a rich source for ideas is comments that add value to the writers and readers. One comment that lead to the writing of this post was by Bill. He wrote, "The more a tree leans, the more it pulls up the roots and compromises its support structure." The above comment induced the question why trees fall and if we humans fall for similar reasons. Trees anchor their roots to the soil. If the soil gets wet or damp it loosens and the roots strength of anchoring weakens. This is a major reason why trees fall. Trees accelerate this process because they lean and so they pull up their roots and weaken them. Do businesses fall or it we that who fall? When we weaken the ground on which we stand we weaken the business and it loses its anchoring strength and so it fails. We dampen the roots of the businesses or even families and loosen the soil on which they stand. Bad managers act like cut the tree of the businesses wrongly causing cracks in them and then allowing for molds to grow and weaken the trees to fall. Those managers pour rainy promises to employees and make the ground wet and so the roots weaken and the businesses fall. Businesses are the trees and mostly fail because of somebody worsening the ground on which they stand. So businesses are. Do you agree? #metaphor #fallingtrees #fallingbusiness #root #anchor #wet
