Throwback to our “The Lab Turns 1” Potluck Last weekend, Andreas Kohler and I invited current and former lab members for a small potluck/birthday party to celebrate our labs’ first anniversary. We enjoyed great food, happy times, and the time just flew by. I love hosting events like this, where our team members can come together just to have a great time. These gatherings do so much for fostering happy and healthy group dynamics and creating a positive lab environment. It’s surreal that the lab is already one year old. The time has flown by, and while I’m thrilled with the journey, it hasn’t been without its challenges. Some parts were way harder than I had ever thought, while others were very manageable – but nothing was easy. I’m proud of the many things that have worked out as planned. We successfully built up the lab, welcomed our first students in March, and got our main methods up and running. However, some tasks were definitely harder and slower than I expected. Starting a group comes with a myriad of tasks, making it difficult to balance my time effectively. Securing funding to get the lab running was a significant achievement, but not all grant applications were successful. The lab is functioning well, but we still face challenges. Reflecting on my own expectations and immediate goals often makes me nervous, especially when considering to-do lists and things I could or should have done differently. Relaxing after a day of doing my best, yet not completing everything I planned, is challenging. I tend to focus on the negatives, which is something I’m actively working on. As a group leader, I strive to be a role model and demonstrate how science can thrive with kindness in academia. Despite setbacks and hurdles, academic kindness remains a central aim for me. On this Sunday, I was simply happy to see our team members working together, performing well, and I am excited to continue our scientific journey with them. Meet Veronika! 🌟 A scientist at the Center for Digital Safety and Security of the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology. With a fairly diverse career path: after studies in Physics and Applied Mathematics, a PhD in mathematical biology at multiple locations (Budapest, Gothenburg, Coventry, and Cambridge), she decided to leave academia. Veronika worked for an IT consultancy for 3 years, where she learned about the importance of reliability and openly sharing knowledge and met some truly amazing people. However, a combination of missing research and her move to Vienna brought her to AIT, where she gets to work on a wide variety of exciting projects. At BatWoMan, Veronika is the mastermind behind building a demonstrator for a battery data space and product passport, based on real production data generated within the project. This demonstrator will serve as a testbed for validating the guidelines and standards that are currently under development in response to increasing sustainability requirements and related EU regulations. Her favorite part about working at BatWoMan is the team: it's a relatively small circle of organizations, with engaged, knowledgeable, and approachable people. 🤝 "Knowledge is my drug," she says; she loves getting to know different fields, technologies, and people. Her research focus, data interoperability, and new ways for data exchange, offer a perfect basis for that since it is relevant for all kinds of sectors. Get to know our working students: 🚀Manuel Stritzel and Kenan Volker Helms use their time at the Life Science Factory not only to expand their knowledge, but also to gain professional experience alongside their studies. "My name is Manuel, I'm 25 years old and I'm studying medicine at the Universitätsmedizin Göttingen. I have been working as a working student at the Life Science Factory since February, mainly supporting the front office. However, I am also available for other tasks, for example from the laboratory or venture team." "My name is Kenan, I'm 25 and I'm studying Business Informatics at the Georg-August University. I work as a Communication Assistant at the Life Science Factory, where I mainly support the team in the areas of communication and content management. I also take on various tasks in the organization of our events." Manuel, why did you decide to work at the Life Science Factory alongside your medical studies? "I found out about the Life Science Factory via LinkedIn and applied after a brief search, as I had been looking for a working student position for some time. I took a virtual tour of the building on the Life Science Factory website and became intrigued. The job interview reinforced my positive impression. The Life Science Factory gives me another insight into medicine and current research topics." Kenan, how has working alongside your studies enhanced your skills? "My role as a working student at the Life Science Factory has expanded my skills in many ways. Working closely with the team has enabled me to gain insights into various specialist areas. The practical application of theoretical study topics has not only reinforced my understanding of them, but also strengthened my problem-solving skills and creativity. I have also recognized the importance of flexibility in dealing with new challenges - a skill that is essential in the dynamic environment of the Life Science Factory." We're delighted that, as part of our 20th anniversary celebrations, we can showcase some of our alumni who, over that period, have all played a part in our journey so far. We are very proud of all our Deallus team - past, present and future.   We conclude our 2024 Alumni celebrations with Philip Miller who was with Deallus for seven years starting as Research Consultant and progressing to Head of EMEA & LATAM.   Philip says of his time: “One of the best memories at Deallus was the Las Vegas retreat. It was not only a great party(!) but a celebration of how far the company had come. I joined as the 8th employee after being interviewed in a ‘rent-by-the hour’ office. In just a few years, we expanded to 100 people and were working with almost all leading pharma companies. It was amazing to be part of that and to see the impact of our work.   What I learned at Deallus still serves me well today. My PhD gave me appreciation for depth of expertise but soon after joining the company, I realised my main interest and value as a consultant was associated more with breadth. Diversity of clients, engagement types, therapy areas, technologies and geographies provided me with the grounding to be able to make connections across topics and to contribute my thinking towards identifying the right questions and, most importantly, arriving at robust choices.”   #alumni #insights #breadthanddepth #informing #projectwork #development #growth #diversity #connections

I just celebrated my birthday. 🎂 It got me reflecting on the unpredictability of my 20s. The 20s are often described as a time of change, growth, and self-discovery. It's a decade where unpredictability reigns over stability, making it both exciting and somewhat daunting. One moment, you’re confident about your career path, and the next, you’re contemplating a new direction. Every decision at this age feels monumental. The stakes seem high because, for us, this is the first time making big life choices independently. There’s a thrilling sense of freedom in knowing you can shape your future. From traveling to new places, meeting diverse people, and exploring different career paths, every day brings something new. I started in a lab coat, immersed in the wonderful world of scientific research, only to discover a passion for science writing. The lack of a clear path can be unsettling. What if I choose the wrong career? What if my passion doesn’t pay the bills? But it is in these moments of uncertainty that we often find our true path. Every experience, whether successful or not, is a learning opportunity that can shape the future. The Greek goddess Athena is known for wisdom, strength, strategy, female arts, crafts, justice, and skill. And she is also known for being telepathic. Not too far off from our own Athena Harper at Alluvia Studio, who has graced us with many of those talents—and more—as Operations Manager for 5 years now! Especially about that telepathic part, as she is known to be able to read Rachel Knutton's mind!✨ We're so grateful that fateful night that Rachel Knutton and Athena were taking a drive and listening to Coolio (of course!). Rachel: "I need to hire someone at Alluvia. Do you know anyone that might be interested?!" Athena: "ME! I want to do it!" The rest is history! It is with the heaviest of hearts that I share the recent passing of my former PhD supervisor, Associate Professor Alexander Dobrovic. Your contributions to translational research and cancer epigenetics have been pivotal to the field. However, it is the radiant positivity you brought into my life and the lives of those fortunate enough to be under your leadership that I remember most vividly. True leaders and mentors who genuinely prioritize each unique individual within their team are a rare find. Despite the demands of your role, your door was always open to discuss all things science, along with sharing your wisdom on life, love (and food!) You championed people from diverse backgrounds and were a fierce advocate for those under your guidance. Your leadership was marked by unparalleled kindness and emotional intelligence. You encouraged us to look out for one another, fostering a family-like atmosphere. Your humanised approach was evident in every interaction. Never did a meeting or casual call pass without you asking about the well-being of my family members with genuine care. I recall a particular moment when I shared with you an opportunity that hadn't worked out as I had hoped before joining your lab. Your response was unforgettable: "I'm glad it didn't work out because I ended up taking their flower and I've watched you grow." Words like these stay with a young person forever. When I decided to leave academia for an industry career, you offered unconditional support, assuring the university of my capacity to undertake both an industry internship and my PhD full-time. It worked - and I wouldn’t be where I am today without your belief in me. I would like to share a few quotes from those who had the privilege of being part of your team, each a testament to your profound impact on our professional and personal lives: - "I owe him my whole career." - "Everything I am and everything I have began with Alex giving me a chance”. - "Alex was one of the sweetest and most caring people I have ever known. Excited to share that the work I developed alongside M. Luísa Castro and Hernâni Gonçalves throughout my internship at CINTESIS - Center for Health Technology and Services Research has been published in MDPI’s journal of Bioengineering as part of the Special Issue Fetal-Maternal Monitoring during Pregnancy and Labor: Trends and Opportunities. 🥳 Fetal heart rate (FHR) monitoring is of utmost importance for fetal well-being assessment, during pregnancy and labor, allowing the early diagnosis of fetal distress situations, necessitating prompt obstetrical intervention. Since FHR signals are often marred by various contaminants, preprocessing techniques are crucial for accurate analysis. Today, I celebrate 1 year with Jones Radiology. Here are 12 lessons I have learnt over the past 12 months: 1. Celebrate the wins – no matter how small, a win's a win. 2. Coffee. 3. It’s okay to not know. This is where you grow. 4. Cobs popcorn is my most common snack. 5. Teamwork really does make the dream work (especially when you have an INCREDIBLE team like I do). 6. Going to BFT International each morning for a workout always sets me up for a great day, mentally and physically.  7. The bigger the handbag = the more useless stuff you carry around. 8. Go outside & take a break. Fresh air does you wonders.  9. Listen to IT and do the updates. 10. You are your environment. I am lucky to be surrounded by such supportive, kind, comforting and helpful colleagues – and I truly believe I have become a better person because of this. 11.
