A common question that we ask ourselves at ATYPICAL is "how do we effectively lead this new generation". I recently came across Simon Sinek's approach and his answer, "it starts with empathy". This was a very inspiring watch for me, particularly as it relates to the expectation that has been placed on work and an employer, and the ways in which the younger generation manages and responds to stress. Equally, I can relate to being an empath on my team - the one who carries the emotional load of others - and while this is a fundamental part of my role, for which my natural ability to emphasize serves me well, it doesn't take away from the fact that it can be emotionally exhausting and sometimes prohibitive in allowing me to actually get my job done. This gave me a shift in my perspective and a gentle reminder on how to be, not only an empathetic but effective leader for my team (majority of which are Gen Z), but also how to equip them to deal with stress in a healthy and productive way.
