Cross pollination between Military & Business Jets At first glance, #privatejets & military #aircraft couldn’t seem further apart. But in the gray area between coddling luxury & mission-based efficiency, there’s a rich history of innovation exchange that has helped both categories stay on the bleeding edge of #aviation. The transfer of #aeronautical tech also continues to advance the business-jet world. Take the fly-by-wire hardware that first appeared on the General Dynamics F-16 fighter. These Digital Flight Control Systems (DFCS) allowed for #faster & more agile fighter #jets by provided more flight consistency than conventional controls. The technology later appeared on the Dassault Mirage 2000, became a primary feature on the Falcon 7X, & is now standard across the Dassault Falcon line. Competitors BOMBARDIER & Gulfstream Aerospace have likewise adopted DFCS for safer #cockpit’s & a more comfortable #passenger experience. Dassault Aviation also applied lessons learned from the carbon-fiber #wing on its Rafale fighter to its Falcon 10X business #jet, which is prepping for #flight tests. Robust #aircraft with system redundancies are #military catnip, further evidenced by the fact that the US Army is investing heavily in Bombardier’s Global platform for #surveillance #missions. The manufacturer’s Global 6500 is powered by Rolls-Royce BR710 turbofan engines that include four standard electrical generators, a configuration that goes above & beyond the standard needs for #VIP aircraft. In addition to the excess output, the 6500 has the speed & range that make it attractive to militaries. Examples of the technology transfer between military & #corporate #aviation include Dassault’s Rafale fighter & Falcon 6X which feature similar head-up displays & DFCS. The first jet engine was invented by British engineer Frank Whittle in 1930. 7. The Boeing 747 jumbo jet has a maximum takeoff weight of over 875,000 pounds (396,852 kg). 8. The fastest civilian aircraft ever built is the Cessna Citation X+, with a top speed of over 717 mph (1,154 km/h). 9. Leonardo Helicopters, one of the helicopter manufacturers for Gulf Helicopters Company recorded a 24% increase in helicopter deliveries in 2023, driven in part by the sale of 32 AW149s to the Polish Ministry of Defense. However, future orders dipped 9% in 2023 compared to 2022. Notably, Leonardo's recent MOU with Bell for the development of tiltrotor technologies highlights the company's commitment to innovation and preparedness for the market's requirements. Last year Dassault Aviation celebrated the 60th anniversary of the first Falcon Jet—the Falcon 20. Famous aviator Charles Lindbergh recommended the plane to Pan Am Airlines for a new business jet division. The Falcon 20 was his choice based on solid, fighter-like construction and high performance. Today the same traits that made the Falcon 20 exceptional at the time, are still the traits that make today’s Falcons different than other modern business jets—and in ways that are important to their owners. Dassault is the only company in the world that builds fighter jets (currently the Rafale) and business jets. It is therefore able to transfer fighter technology and construction techniques (fighter DNA) to its business jets. All Dassault business jets have slats and flaps for slow, safe approach speeds to short airfields. They are similar to Rafale systems that permit carrier landings. And both types of aircraft have tough trailing link landing gear that can take a pounding (and make every arrival smooth in a business jet). They also permit the business jets to land at close to maximum takeoff weight, so a Falcon could make a short hop, pick up passengers and fly across an ocean. Aircraft - Jet exhaust nozzles Posted 211024-03 Tag #aircraft #jetengines Anybody watching a video of a modern jet fighter would be amazed at the variety of manoeuvres they can now undertake. Some of these extreme capabilities are as a result of vector thrusting where the rear nozzle can be moved in different directions whilst being able to shrink and enlarge the nozzle area which can quickly adjust the acceleration and deceleration. This combined with switching on and off of the afterburner creates a whole variety of manoeuvre capabilities. The F-15 in the video below has not got vector thrusting but the video clearly illustrates the capability to enlarge and shrink the nozzle size. The Russians are well ahead in the game of developing 3D thrust vectoring creating some most spectacular twists and turns in their air displays in particular when vertically climbing and halting in the climb to slip back down vertically. Banno Jet fighters with tilt-enabled nozzles, also known as vector thrusting, include: 1. F-22 Raptor: Equipped with two-dimensional thrust vectoring, allowing the nozzles to tilt up and down for better maneuverability. 2. Sukhoi Su-30, Su-35, and Su-57: These Russian jets feature 3D thrust vectoring, with nozzles capable of tilting in multiple directions. 3. Lockheed Martin F-35B: Uses a swiveling nozzle to direct thrust for vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL). 4. Harrier Jump Jet: Known for its ability to redirect engine thrust for VTOL capabilities.
