This past weekend was the Pacific Airshow here in Huntington Beach. While the weather essentially canceled the entire event, it got me thinking....... I was struck by the precision, skill, and dedication of the Thunderbirds and Blue Angels. Out of the 160,000+ licensed pilots in the U.S., only a very select few get to wear that uniform and perform at such an elite level. It got me thinking about how this applies to every profession, including sales. In our field, many people can "fly" — they can make calls, close deals, and get the job done. But to truly excel, to become the best of the best, requires much more than just being good at the basics. It’s about: -Mastering every detail -Pushing yourself beyond the norm -Being willing to do what others won’t -Relentlessly improving every day Most pilots won’t become a Thunderbird or Blue Angel, just like most salespeople won’t become top performers. But for those who are willing to put in the work, stay disciplined, and chase excellence, the sky isn’t the limit—it’s just the beginning. This guy this morning… mocking me when I said I'd enquired about a 'call for noms' (Navy speak for an invitation to nominate yourself for a role) in Antarctica…     The only roles were Class 5 licence drivers and ship unloaders doing 12 hour shifts of heavy lifting (which will never be an option for my poor old mum bod).     He gave me this look. Then proceeded to gleefully mock me for his version of my imagined ideal role.     "You know they don't need Psychologists down there?"     "There's not a strategy office down there."     It got worse. With a MOCK VOICE… yes people, he actually did this, "Now, let's just stop and think about what we're all doing here. Are we really unloading? Is it a ship we're unloading? Why should we unload this ship? And who are our customers??" 🤨    None of this has the same potency without the facials and the VOICE of course. I tell you, the ENJOYMENT he got out of this!    Ok, I'll admit this is funny because there's a grain of truth in it. It reminded me of a comment made by a GM on my course once.     This GM had said "this programme has really honed for me the importance of making time for strategic thinking but I've really struggled with the idea of becoming a chin-stroking executive who sits around 'thinking' for hours but not getting anything done." 🤔    It drew a smile from all of us at the time. And of course, this was the exact picture my husband was creating to brighten up our morning drudgery. But in my defence, the next thing she said was this -     "But this strategic thinking process we've learnt helps me frame how I can use that time best, and feel productive."    I'll concede that even very productive chin-stroking executives might not be a critical deployable NZDF post in Antarctica, and that there is a slim chance I may have to fork out for a fancy tour in order to tick this one off my bucket list, but I maintain that chin-stroking of the sort that sparks strategic insights in senior leaders who need to solve complex business problems is critical.     Speaking of which, if very productive, strategic insight-sparking chin-stroking sounds like something you want to do more of, do I have something for you!    There is ONE intake left for 2024 of the Strategic Thinker Development Programme.     It's a public intake, so I can take individuals. No smiley balloons or airplanes with this announcement--instead, my latest job transition has left me quite simply humbled. It was an unexpected journey, and I have so many of you to thank for laying that yellow-brick road before me. Impossible to name all of you in this post, you know who you are--you who in any small way gave of your time and talents on my behalf--and I will honor and seek to repay you in every which way that I can. That Emerald City I've arrived at wears the colors of blue and red as I start my next chapter with Republic Services. However, I need to thank in particular Insight Global and the DERS team at the Arizona Department of Economic Security for placing their trust in me to bring me onto their team for what could only be a short time; and for being ever so understanding when I had to make a difficult career decision. You are all amazing and I'm ever indebted to you! As we enter 2025, let me leave all of you with this thought--because I want more of my colleagues and friends who are CEOs, CIOs, and senior leaders across industries in this shared world of ours to join with me in prioritizing the most important thing we can with AI--even when profits don't justify it, it's time that we go beyond our past record of minimally meeting ADA requirements. Today, I want to share a powerful lesson in collaboration, discipline, and excellence—inspired by the **U.S. Navy Blue Angels**. ## **1. The Blue Angels: A Symphony of Precision** The Blue Angels, established in 1946, serve as a proud symbol of the Navy and Marine Corps' finest. Their awe-inspiring formations and death-defying maneuvers have inspired millions of spectators worldwide. But beyond the thrilling airshows, the Blue Angels exemplify the true essence of teamwork. ## **2. Trust at 500 Miles Per Hour** Imagine flying directly at each other, less than **100 feet off the ground**, at speeds pushing **500 miles per hour**. Mistakes are not an option. No matter the challenges, they remember that many naval aviators would love to be in their seats. As professionals, we must also appreciate the honor and privilege of our roles. ## **4. Lifehack #2: Admit Mistakes, Strive for Excellence** The Blue Angels don't shy away from acknowledging mistakes. They debrief openly, learn, and improve. As salespeople, we can embrace this mindset. When we stumble, we learn. When we excel, we celebrate. It's how we grow. ## **5. Lifehack #3: Shared Values and Proper Training** The Blue Angels operate on shared values—integrity, discipline, and precision. They cross-train relentlessly, ensuring everyone knows their role. In business, we must foster a similar foundation. Absolute faith in one another is imperative among members of the U.S. Navy Blue Angels precision flying team, where soaring canopy-to-canopy at 500 mph is all part of a day’s work. Building Radical Trust Trust is so baked into Blue Angels culture that it transcends personal consideration. Armatas doesn’t simply trust his specific crew to prepare his plane for a safe and successful flight. Instead, he trusts in the process that has guided every crew member who ever worked with the Blue Angels. He trusts a culture that values attention to detail and delivering on commitments with absolute commitment and discipline. Such next-level trust rests on a belief that “nothing is too minute” to deserve attention. If you handle the details to an extreme extent, says Armatas, the big stuff falls into place. “As a leader, when you have that level of trust, it allows you to keep your mind on what’s most important,” he says. “The expectations here are extremely high that everybody does their job not only well and correctly but also independently, so that teammates don’t need to keep going back and checking on them.” The Blue Angels are also devoted to continuous improvement. After every demo, the flight crew and pilots meet for a debrief. “ ‘Glad to Be Here’ The Blue Angels’ top core value is gratitude—and they live up to it in every conversation. Armatas says the Blue Angels’ single strongest tradition is the greeting/affirmation, “Glad to be here,” delivered by team members in casual conversation as well as before briefings and other more formal gatherings. “The phrase is intended as a constant reminder that those chosen for the Blue Angels team are not special, but rather lucky to have been pulled from a submarine or aircraft carrier of the Navy fleet and given the opportunity to do difficult but ultimately rewarding and even fun and exciting work,” says Armatas. “It reminds each and every team member that what got them there was earned, not given to them, and that keeping your spot should never be taken for granted.” Ship, Shipmates and Self The power of a great culture comes from transcending the individual yet linking individuals to a mission and set of values bigger and longer-lasting than themselves. A 2023 article in the Harvard Business Review assigned leaders of purpose-driven cultures the responsibility “to clearly communicate and authentically embody the company’s purpose and values” while also drawing “clear connections between purpose, values and performance, acknowledging the inevitabilities of short-term trade-offs in favor of a grander mission.” The Blue Angels have always put their grander mission at the heart of their values and performance. “In the Navy, leaders learn to do what is best for the ship, one’s shipmates and yourself, in that order,” #leadership #trust
