When the Fox News Channel launched in 1996, critics called it disorganized, incompetent, and laughably inept. But, during the 2000 election, it captivated the nation – and just maybe changed the fate of American democracy. Listen to Slow Burn: The Rise of Fox News now: https://lnkd.in/gqdG5nEz

As a tiny act of observance this Juneteenth, I listened to this recent episode of Fresh Air: How Formerly Enslaved People Were Stripped of Land where Tonya Mosely interviews journalist Alexia Fernández Campbell whose team at Mother Jones published a three-part piece titled "40 Acres and a Lie." A few takeaways: ⏳ History hits different once you've circled the sun for several decades...the past impact of occurrences on real peoples' lives then connects with the present impact on real people's lives today in a very palpable way. 📜 The provisional titles issued to a small fraction of formerly enslaved people under "40 Acres and a Mule" were never finalized when Congress was unable to garner enough votes to do so, and indeed, were reversed. The laws they did manage to pass were vetoed by President Andrew Johnson clearing the path for the land to be returned to former slave owners. 🖋 It took an act of Congress to make it possible to digitize the documents from the Freedman's Bureau, estimated at over 1.8 million. https://lnkd.in/enHGtZRP I also encourage everyone to listen to this important podcast that explains both how right wing online media is making money, and how the Democratic Party's failure to recognize the power of that media cost them the ability to reach conservatives and particularly men. Lots to consider here, whether you work in journalism or politics. #journalism #media #politics

It's inspiring to witness a powerful shift as more people take the time to truly research their vote. Leaders with the courage to uphold conservative values are rising, and this is bringing the silent majority into the light. Many of us are now driven to act because we’ve seen the damage from radical policies that we didn’t challenge soon enough. But here’s the hopeful part: in our anxiety, we’ve found new channels for truth. Independent voices, free from the grip of mainstream media, are offering clarity. What struck me today was hearing a podcast mention that much of Harris's remaining support comes from those who only consume left-leaning media. If that’s where you’re getting your information, know that many of us have hope—hope that as the truth comes to light, those dark corners of misinformation will be exposed. A brighter, more informed future is within reach. Keep searching, keep questioning, and trust that the tide is turning toward transparency.

The economic pressures facing independent local journalists have led to significant gaps in San Francisco political reporting. We aim to fill some of those gaps with a new podcast: SF Politics | Unpacked In the inaugural episode, we unpack Proposition B, a $390 million bond measure on the ballot this November. Listen or watch at the link below. If you find it valuable, please like, comment, share, and subscribe -- the algorithm seems to punish this sort of local content, and your engagement signals that this content matters. Episode 1: $390 Million and a Single Word: How ‘Family’ Might Shape San Francisco’s Future.* *Errata: In Episode 1, we incorrectly state that “every single argument in favor of Proposition B [was] paid for by the same organization -- Healthy, Vibrant SF.” In fact, 10 of the 11 paid arguments in favor were funded by Healthy, Vibrant SF, Yes on B. The eleventh was paid for by Jim Chappell. https://lnkd.in/gKpw8kCV
