Staying Self-Motivated as an Electrical Technician. In my experience, motivation isn’t something that just appears. It’s a mindset that must be nurtured daily. Here are some strategies I use to keep myself driven, no matter the situation: 🔹 Set Personal Goals: Whether it’s mastering a new troubleshooting technique, learning a new tool, or simply ensuring a safer work environment, having clear goals keeps me engaged and looking forward to each day. 🔹 Embrace Challenges as Learning Opportunities: When something goes wrong, I view it as an opportunity to expand my skill set. Overcoming technical builds confidence and re-inforces a proactive approach to problems. 🔹 Celebrate Small Wins: Success doesn’t always come in the form of major breakthroughs. Each small achievement, like solving a stubborn fault or completing routine maintenance without a hitch, is a reason to feel proud. 🔹 Keep the Bigger Picture in Mind: I remind myself that every resolved issue contributes to something larger—whether it’s reducing downtime, maintaining safety standards, or enabling seamless operations for the entire team. What is the fastest growing job in the US? It's not data prompt engineer. It's not even nursing. It's wind turbine service technician. Demand for this job is projected to grow 45% by 2032. We worry a lot about the political will to transition to a greener economy. But do we have the people skills we need to accelerate the transition? According to a new National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) report, projected demand for skilled workers is nearly double the supply. Friendly reminder: Give GREEN people a CHANCE! I graduated in 2022.. and have yet to even have a slim chance of getting an instrumentation/electrical helper position. I have applied, reached out, everything short of begging and nothing… I’m on LinkedIn, Zip Recruiter, Indeed, Glassdoor, company websites, etc. and I honestly couldn’t tell you the last time I was actually called for an interview. It’s disheartening and honestly, discouraging. It’s hard to want to continue in the field and has me often wondering if I even got in the right one. In the plant I often get, “Huh?! You have your degree… why aren’t you an instrument tech already?” And honestly, I can’t give them a good response- because I have no idea either. I am 20 years old. I worked and paid my own way to graduate high school a year early at 16, and had a degree in my hand by 17. I’m willing to learn, grow, and be the best technician I can be. Why is every contracting company looking for helpers with 3-5 years of experience? You ARE the experience! It’s often the stepping stone to working in-house. It’s hard to gain it when no one will give the green guy a chance. And I hate I even have to say this in this day and age, but give women in this field a chance too.
