How to bridge the Swiss and the Silicon Valley cultures of #innovation and #entrepreneurship? As a Swiss passionate about innovation and entrepreneurship with impact, having worked with startups from Switzerland and the Silicon Valley, and being married to a Californian, I enjoy building bridges between the two (business) cultures. Expanding on Emilia Pasquier's valuable insights in her post below, here are my thoughts on how to blend the Silicon Valley and the Swiss way to get the best of both in entrepreneurship & innovation: ✅ Dream big (U.S. style), know your "why". ✅ Maximize the upside (a U.S. strength) of your venture, while minimizing your downside risk (a Swiss speciality). You might not want to scale, and that's fine. Know what success looks like for you and aim for that. ✅ Go for progress, not perfection (a challenge for us Swiss "precisionists"). Learn by doing. Iterate and continuously improve. ✅ It's important to "look before you leap", but don't succumb to analysis paralysis. Take that leap. "Don't worry, be scrappy" and start. Talk to potential customers and get feedback to gain clarity and navigate uncertainty. ✅ When making decisions, consent is faster than (very Swiss) consensus. Speed is of the essence. ✅ Know your customers, and their challenges you want to help solve, really well. Empathize. Build for them. Use Lean Innovation frameworks l, such as Lean Startup, to iteratively build-measure-learn and make sure you create sustainable, shared value. Building a great product which nobody needs won't sell and is a waste of resources. Your own and your team's time and energy to begin with. ✅ Hence, validate the desirability of your solution first, then its feasibility and viability - and of your #startup. ✅ Have a learning mindset. And don't forget to sell and market your stuff. Selling will be more effective when you deeply know the pain points you are solving. ✅ Be confident without being cocky. ✅ Make sure to get help on the journey and manage your energy, time and focus. Happy innovating with impact 🚀
👋 Hi friends of the Bay, Switzerland, Innovation and the startup ecosystem! Please share your thoughts about entrepreneurship and the Swiss versus Silicon Valley Mindset. Do you share my experience? How can we bridge the two cultures? https://lnkd.in/gCfV_DAb And some additional thoughts here: Swiss and European entrepreneurs often approach pitching with a meticulous focus on numbers and specific details. However, upon entering the U.S. business landscape, a shift towards emphasizing storytelling and vision becomes crucial. American investors, known for their lower risk aversion compared to their European counterparts, place a greater emphasis on opportunity rather than dwelling on potential risks and challenges. The cultural nuances in the U.S., particularly in regions like the Bay Area, foster a greater tolerance for failure. Individuals are encouraged to take risks, try new things, and learn from the journey. In contrast, Swiss and European business logic tends to prioritize success, often leading to a reluctance to attempt ventures without a guaranteed outcome. Empowering Swiss and European founders in the U.S. involves imparting the importance of effective salesmanship and encouraging them to think big without fear. While these observations represent general trends, it's essential to recognize that industry-specific differences exist. In sectors such as biotech, for example, the meticulous focus on numbers remains highly appreciated. These insights underscore the importance of adaptability and understanding cultural nuances when navigating the dynamic landscape of entrepreneurship across different regions.
