The new #UKGovernment has set a fast pace for change, with a clear set of priorities for #transport, focused on #bus, #rail and #greenertransport, greater integration, and geared towards boosting #economicgrowth, #decarbonisation and #socialinclusion. But how can this be delivered in places outside of large Metro areas, like the #EastofEngland? Transport East Chief Executive, Andrew Summers' keynote at TRANSPORT Smart Class, London & South East England 2024 examined these challenges through the lens of the recently published #TransportStrategy for the East, exploring the evidence base and initiatives underway in the region, to provide our audience with valuable insights to help progress this agenda across other parts of the country. It’s Bus Users UK’s ‘Catch the bus month’. This is not a post about one of their fantastic foam hands to promote bus use (I don’t have one currently.) Although this is a great campaign which TravelMaster® is supporting and you may see posts about soon. However, if you are ever wondering why you should catch the bus or why I ‘harp on about it’. Then this report from Confederation of Passenger Transport gives a great overview of why the bus is great for the economy. Today, the Confederation of Passenger Transport (CPT) launched a significant report highlighting the critical role buses play in driving economic growth in our communities. The panel included notable speakers: Simon Lightwood, Minister of Local Transport Claire Ward, Mayor of East Midland Scott Knowles, Chief Executive at East Midlands Chambers Gerard Whelan, Consulting Economist at KPMG Their insights shed light on how investing in public transport—especially buses—can support local businesses, improve connectivity, and unlock economic potential in both Urban and rural areas. #CatchTheBusMonth #BusesBenefits #EconomicDevelopment

#NZRail 2024 I thoroughly enjoyed my fireside chat with the fabulous Rachel Cara and Garry Whale about the need to fund and build resilience in our metro rail networks. As they elaborated so well, our metro rail networks are incredibly important and disruptions have serious impacts on the lives and livelihoods of our customers, be they passengers, businesses or the owners of goods. Investing in rail isn't just about future growth or mode shift, and compromises aren't just trading off efficiency. Failure to invest creates real impacts on real people - the network must become resilient enough to give assurance of reliable services for all of its users. For example, there are rarely alternative routes for NZ rail users when some incident closes a track (unlike the road network, where we have generally invested in alternative routes for when things go wrong). My role at KiwiRail is focused squarely on the metropolitan railways, and my customers are both passengers and freight. Their needs - rightly - are the driver for all of the future planning work we do. The jointly developed KiwiRail and Auckland Transport strategic rail programme sets out how we need to invest to create resilience: https://lnkd.in/gyZ8v_kk And there is urgency: it's not just future patronage at risk, or that we may move goods around less efficiently (and create a few more potholes on roads), there are real human and economic costs every day. The next Foundation for Integrated Transport Webinar has been scheduled! "The Case for Rail" 21 November 2024 12:00 - 13:30 GMT Rail is the backbone of the transport network, enabling large numbers of people to be moved efficiently and offering the best opportunity to replace longer distance car trips and short haul flights with low carbon travel. Yet the UK rail network in many places is overcrowded, expensive and unreliable, suffering from years of underinvestment and fragmentation. The oversight body Great British Rail has not come forward with any significant reforms. The new government has pledged to renationalise nearly all passenger rail services within five years. This webinar will discuss how we can get more people out of cars and planes and onto trains, while ensuring there is enough new investment in rail capacity to accommodate them. This is one of a series of webinars showcasing the work funded by the Foundation for Integrated Transport (FIT). This webinar includes presentations from FIT grantees the Campaign for Better Transport, Greengauge 21 and FIT Fellow Georgia Guerra, with panellists from Green Alliance and the Community Rail Network, chaired by FIT Trustee Martin Clarke. Speakers: Michael Solomon Williams - Head of Campaigns, Campaign for Better Transport Jim Steer - Director, Greengauge21 Giorgia Guerra - FIT Fellow Panellists: Rosie A. - Policy Advisor, Green Alliance Gary Shipp - Sustainable Transport Projects Coordindator, Community Rail Network https://lnkd.in/g3JkS6jP

🛤️ Shaping the Future of UK Transport: A Bold Vision for Connectivity and Growth by Juergen Maier 🚄🌍 I'm delighted to see the publication of Juergen Maier's Rail and Urban Transport Review. This comprehensive report outlines a bold, forward-thinking vision for a greener, more inclusive, and highly efficient transport infrastructure across the UK. 🇬🇧 The review’s emphasis on creating a long-term National Transport Strategy is precisely what the country needs to ensure that our transport networks are fit not just for the next five years, but for the next fifty. With ambitious targets, such as doubling rail’s share of journeys within a decade and accelerating project delivery timelines by 25%, this report lays out a clear roadmap for transforming how we connect our cities, stimulate economic growth, and achieve our decarbonisation goals. 🌱📈 I’m particularly enthused by the focus on harnessing public-private partnerships and enhancing devolution to empower local authorities, ensuring that every region of the UK benefits from this transformation. As someone passionate about sustainable development and innovation, I believe these recommendations will be pivotal in shaping a prosperous and connected future for all. 🤝💡 We need to seize this report and use it as a catalyst to work together to turn this bold vision into reality. The future of UK transport is not just about getting from A to B—it’s about building a resilient, sustainable, and thriving economy for everyone. 🚉💼 Jason Prince Juergen Maier CBE FRS FREng #TransportInnovation #Sustainability #Infrastructure #UKGrowth #FutureOfTransport

**BUSES AFTER THE GENERAL ELECTION** As we look to the future, the outcome of the General Election will be pivotal for the direction of local public transport. The emerging victor, whether a single party or a coalition, will inherit a landscape where many authorities are transitioning to franchising models, while others are striving to extract the best value from enhanced partnerships with operators. In Transport Times | News & Analysis | Events latest insight article, Gerard Whelan, Director at KPMG, explains five critical areas to consider in this evolving scenario. Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/ehriRfV4 My thoughts... A good, succinct article, one thing missing for me is #accessibility - we all appreciate the whole #transport sector is working hard on this area. However there is a significant amount still to do to. Making #accessbility a true business priority is critical to generating the engagement to improve accessibility for all. Let me know that you think? What future predictions do you have for #transport ? 🚆🌟🚆 #ConnectingScotland Yesterday I attended the #Rail #Scotland #Conference, bringing together industry leaders and stakeholders from across Scotland's Railway. Cabinet Secretary for Transport in Scotland, Fiona Hyslop MSP, opened the conference with an emphasis on delivering a #betterfutureforrail, with a strong commitment to contributing to a #netzero future and emphasising their determination to continue to integrate #track and #train seamlessly, ensuring a more efficient and passenger-centric rail system. It was good to hear from Transport Scotland, Network Rail, ScotRail, and other stakeholders discuss Scotland's strategic priorities and future challenges. #Decarbonisation was a central theme, with a clear commitment to replacing diesel trains and promoting sustainable modes of transportation although this is not without its challenges. The focus on enhancing the #passenger #experience makes it clear that Scotland's rail sector is dedicated to delivering a step change in how passengers perceive and interact with rail travel. For future rolling stock procurement the #comfort of the #trainseat and #level #boarding are going to be a focus. In addition to strategic discussions, there were interesting presentations safety highlighting the industry's commitment to ensuring the #wellbeing of both passengers and staff, the importance of fostering a positive #employee experience, and, attracting new #talent to the rail sector emerged as a priority, underscoring the need for a diverse and skilled workforce for the future. And, last but not least, hearing from the very passionate Heather Waugh advocating for the future of freight and its importance to a greener economy. On a final note, I am also looking forward to travelling on TransPennine Express and trying their new on-board catering offer. Jools Townsend from Community Rail Network emphasised the integral role of railways in connecting communities, fostering local engagement, and the importance of collaboration between rail operators, local authorities, and community groups in driving positive social impact. Beyond the insightful panel discussions and presentations, the networking opportunities were invaluable. I had the pleasure of connecting with many industry leaders and exploring potential collaborations.
