On 18 March, ERRIN participated in the 10th European Summit of Regions and Cities in Mons #SommetMons24 #eulocal. With hundreds of local and regional elected representatives and European decision-makers, this event was an opportunity to join the European Committee of the Regions in committing to foster local and regional #InnovationEcosystems across Europe, with a few key takeaways: - Local and regional authorities are key actors in addressing today’s challenges, such as the climate crisis, the green and digital transitions, sustainability and economic development. - There is a need for a renewed cohesion policy, strengthening its role for just transition and harnessing the potential of regional and local solutions for tackling global challenges. 🌐 It was also an opportunity to promote ERRIN’s involvement in the Living in EU initiative. With a dedicated stand, the #SommetMons24 was an opportunity to present and promote a multi-level governance approach in fostering digital transformation.  🤝 As we celebrate this significant milestone with the European Committee of the Regions and engage in meaningful debates at the summit, we look forward to further strengthening our collaborations and driving local and regional #innovation. Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/d3b5cyQG

The UN Summit of the Future is being held on 22-23 September, 2024. It’s a talk fest of how to reform the UN and its subsidiaries, stakeholders, and oh yes, the inevitable celebrities, with a focus on greater youth involvement. But three questions loom large for me – 1. Who is driving the vision, 2. Who benefits and, 3. Will it have any teeth to create real change?

Maybe we shouldn’t be “building the plane as we fly it.” This expression has come up a lot in recent conversations - we need to be responsive to present challenges while iterating our strategies, and building antifragile, equitable and transformative systems. It’s all important and we often don’t have the luxury of sequencing and only focusing on one over another. I was recently on a travel journey of 30+ hours over 3 flights. I reflected on what I’d learned during the trip, reviewed my notes, while mindful of periodic turbulence and plane protocols many of us have gotten used to. I was struck by how much I didn’t want anyone to be building that particular plane (or any aircraft) while flying it. What a ludicrous notion. We expect our planes to be brilliantly designed, pressure tested, and structurally and mechanically safe and sound. The expectations placed on Global South leaders in the aid system is enormous. Operating with limited and restricted resources, they’re learning from and supporting their communities, often contributing to local, regional and international policy and operational conversations, responding to new and ongoing crises, catalyzing change and setting powerful visions of hope. Many risk their lives. We need to release the pressure valve and breathe more flexible and equitably distributed resources, cede and share power. And while this system's change work is happening, what expression can we use instead? I’ll offer up one while I wait to hear yours. And I invite you to improve on mine as well. 🌿 We’re creating the hiking trail while we go on an intentional adventure 🌿 We’ve consulted with the team about our vision, learned about the ecosystems involved and taken the terrain into consideration. We’ll need to clear bushes, fallen trees, navigate spider webs and decision points and identify the best way to cross the streams and be prepared to respond to the expected and engage with other creatures that share and cross the path.
