Does a quantity surveyor really need to have experience in a particular industry? The bulk of QS job openings specify that candidates must have a specific level of industry experience. For instance, a company that wins a residential project usually looks for a QS with prior experience working on residential projects. However, why is this required? Do you believe someone with experience only working on hospital or commercial projects won't be able to handle a residential project? While sector-specific experience can provide certain advantages, it is not an absolute necessity. A well-rounded QS with strong foundational skills and a willingness to learn can successfully manage projects across different sectors. It might be beneficial for hiring managers to consider the broader skill set and adaptability of candidates rather than strictly adhering to sector-specific experience requirements.
