MSC mega container ship docking: near-miss or perfect maneuver? Container ship MSC MARGRIT looked like she barely avoided contact with pier at San Antonio port, Chile, in the evening Jun 11, while maneuvering to berth on arrival from Coronel. It looked like a near-miss to onlookers, and on video, but according to port authorities, everything was under control all the time, with assisting tugs and pilot on board, who was in charge of the operation. 6th of June is International Level Crossing Awareness Day (ILCAD). Awareness of safety on level crossings is an increasingly important topic and the majority of level crossings worldwide are still unprotected. We are proud to be part of this event in Buenos Aires and being able to raise awareness. This year’s target audience is vulnerable rail users, under the slogan "Beware of trains - Life can change in a split second”. In Wavetrain, our mission is to reduce risk at the most critical ones – the unprotected level crossings. This risk is common for all countries with railroad. Our recipe for this is our innovative and intelligent solution that reduce risk fast, at low cost and in high volumes. Because the challenge here is to do this in scale. VESSEL REVIEW: Chilean transport company Naviera Cruz del Sur recently took delivery of a new double-ended Ro-Pax ferry designed and built by local shipyard ASENAV. 'Don Orlando I' will be operated in the Chacao Channel transporting passengers, vehicles, and essential goods between the large island of Chiloe and the Pargua area in the southern region of Los Lagos. The double-ended design coupled with azimuthing thrusters connected to two diesel engines will allow for safe navigation even in strong winds and currents, thus ensuring the ferry will also be operated as a lifeline vessel. The propulsion also delivers a service speed of 9.5 knots. Full article link in comments.
