TORSIONAL WELDING VS. LONGITUDINAL WELDING: A COMPARISON FOR MEMBRANE APPLICATIONS 🔧 Torsional welding is particularly effective when processing the thinnest PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) membranes. Why? Here is a brief comparison that highlights the advantages and differences to longitudinal welding. 💡 Processing Torsional welding: The patented torsional sonotrode from MS Ultrasonic processes very thin membranes and films particularly gently. The rotating movement minimises the load on the joining components and prevents damage. Longitudinal welding: Vertical vibrations are used here, which cause a higher mechanical load and can damage sensitive materials such as PTFE membranes. 💡 Strength Torsional welding: Thanks to the high frequencies (20-35 kHz) and gentle friction, a robust melt is created between the joining partners. This results in high-strength and dense weld seams, ideal for applications that require absolute reliability. Longitudinal welding: While it also produces strong joints, the increased stresses and temperatures can lead to material deformation and micro-cracks, which can compromise tightness. 💡 Application variety Torsional welding: Particularly suitable for sensitive applications such as pressure equalisation elements, degassing valves and medical drip chambers. This method minimises the notch effect and material thinning, which preserves the integrity of the thin PTFE membranes. Longitudinal welding: Can be used in many ways, but reaches its limits with sensitive materials. 📝 Summary Both welding methods have their specific advantages. While torsional welding stands out particularly with sensitive materials such as PTFE membranes, longitudinal welding remains a reliable and versatile method for numerous applications. Chromium zirconium copper has good electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, high hardness, wear resistance, explosion resistance, crack resistance, and high softening temperature. We are happy to inform you that our article Microstructure investigation and optimization of process parameters of ultrasonic welding for Al-Cu dissimilar joints using design of experiment is now available online. #Ultrasonic Metal #Welding (UMW) employs high-power ultrasonic vibrations to join thin metal sheets of different materials, effectively addressing the thermal damage issues associated with traditional welding methods. This study aimed to optimize thin #aluminum (Al) and pure copper (#Cu) metal sheets #joining using high-power ultrasonic vibration. The investigation focused on the effect of input parameters, including time, static pressure, and welding power, on the output parameter of joint strength. 📌 𝐋𝐨𝐰 𝐒𝐜𝐫𝐚𝐩 𝐂𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐖𝐞𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐭 𝐌𝐚𝐮𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐢𝐬 📶 Recent tests carried out with our partner, the Institut MAUPERTUIS, have enabled us to determine the repeatability of our CANUNDA-HP shaping solution and validate its industrial relevance. We conducted a series of 50 welding tests on copper samples (1.5mm and 2mm thick, the typical thickness of busbars in the industry) using the optimal welding parameters: 8kW power, 5m/min speed, 0mm focal position, and a 70% central spot to 30% ring distribution. 🔍 To validate the quality of each sample, we performed a triple check: 🔸 Visual inspection of the weld bead 🔸 Macrographic section analysis 🔸 Precitec's LWM sensor providing 3 signals (plume, temperature, and reflection) to detect any process variability 📽️ The video below compiles all 50 welds, superimposing these 3 checks. 📉 We achieved a 𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐚𝐩 𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝟒% according to our criteria and tolerances.
