A good way to measure the cost of living is by setting benchmarks that account for the unique characteristics of different regions or areas. Perhaps Singapore could develop its own benchmark by introducing a weighted 'Cost of Living Index.' This index would not only reflect the general expenses across various regions, but also weigh them according to local factors such as housing costs, transportation expenses, and price levels for essential goods and services. By tailoring this index to our specific regional needs and economic conditions, we can provide a more accurate and meaningful measure of affordability and economic disparity within the country.

3 differences between Singapore and New York (not representative of the rest of the U.S.): 1. While in many cultures, people don’t always say what they mean, there’s a culture of direct communication in NY to drill down to the value anyone can bring (instead of getting into the details and technicalities from the start). 2. Not taking too much time is the way to show you care in NY, whereas giving people time is the way you show you care in Singapore. That’s why 30-min zoom calls are common in NY, whereas 1-hour in-person meetings are common in Singapore. The great transport infrastructure (having barely any traffic congestion) in Singapore also makes it easier for people to meet up. 3. Drivers in Singapore have improved their skills sharing the roads with pedestrians and cyclists, but the skills that drivers in Manhattan have is next level - dealing with pedestrians walking out into the streets all the time. Even so, general safety is still the best in Singapore. I’ve seen more socially-deviant people over the past months in New York (photo in comments) than over my entire life in Singapore (read more about Singapore in the link shared by Jacqueline Poh below) If you enjoyed this post, please take 1-2 minutes to do this 10-question survey about the venture community and share the link : https://lnkd.in/dksDCt-v

Delighted to see Singapore has claimed the third spot in global ranking for being one of the top destinations for families to relocate and create a bright future for their next generation! This achievement highlights the appeal and suitability of Singapore as a family-friendly environment. Among the criteria considered, Singapore stood out in terms of its earning potential, employment prospects and economic mobility, thanks to its free market economy and connectivity to the rest of Asia. I think an important reason behind Singapore's competitive job market is due to its emphasis on skills over experience. This means candidates such as recent graduates and less-experienced workers have a better chance of entering their desired industries and gaining valuable on-the-job knowledge. The achievement signals Singapore's success in growth and development and I am confident that the country will continue to attract more family businesses, offices, and investors in the coming future. https://lnkd.in/gwsWHFXH #Singapore #FamilyBusiness #GlobalRanking

How did I end up in Singapore? When I first visited Singapore as a tourist in 2007, I knew little about the country and didn't expect much from another Asian city. So, I was overwhelmed by what I saw. It felt like the perfect city, with a quality of life that exceeded that of all the other cities I had visited, including Paris, New York, London, and so on. After some time, I discovered I could set up a Singapore company and apply for a long-term visa as a company director. So, in 2010, I moved to Singapore to start my business. This Employment Pass option will still be available in 2025. As a corporate administrator, we assist dozens of entrepreneurs each year in applying for Employment Passes and EntrePass and getting them approved. So living here is more expensive than in other places, but to me, it's worth every dollar I spend. Today, Singapore is a respected global business hub and financial center. It accommodates businesses of all sizes, from solopreneurs and startups to the biggest corporations. Customers, suppliers, financial institutions, and authorities welcome Singapore companies worldwide. Singapore's high reputation helps my business grow. Singapore is the right place for you if you want to build your business globally and prefer win-win relationships. #Singapore #b2b *** I help incorporate and manage your Singapore company. We're 5 months into 2024, and Singapore's local regulations are stirring the business landscape, challenging companies to adapt or be left behind. The tightening of rules for expat workers and the push for fair opportunities for locals may ruffle some feathers, but savvy businesses see this as a chance to innovate and thrive. The recent regulatory updates, such as the requirement for fund managers to obtain a Capital Markets Services License by August 1, 2024, are shaking up the industry. While this may pose initial hurdles, it presents a golden opportunity for companies to enhance operational efficiency and nurture local talent in key sectors like AI, technology, engineering, and healthcare. Yes, there may be concerns about increased labor costs impacting SMEs, but let's not overlook Singapore's business-friendly environment, strategic location, and top-notch infrastructure. These factors continue to attract international companies, making Singapore a hotspot for regional headquarters and a breeding ground for innovation. So, are you ready to swim against the tide and turn regulatory challenges into business triumphs?

𝐒𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐞’𝐬 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐄𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐲𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐭𝐡: 𝐀 𝐘𝐞𝐚𝐫-𝐨𝐧-𝐘𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐎𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰 📊 Over the past year, foreign employment in Singapore recorded a positive net growth of 39,000 jobs (June 2023 - June 2024), continuing the recovery from the significant decline experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic (-147,000 jobs in 2020-21). Key takeaways from this trend: 📈 The rebound over the last few years highlights strong economic recovery post-pandemic, with substantial growth in 2022-23 (+162,000 jobs). 🌏 The current year's more moderate growth reflects stability as Singapore continues to balance workforce demands across key industries. As Singapore maintains its position as a global hub for talent and business, the demand for foreign professionals and skilled workers remains a critical part of its workforce strategy. Singapore's population reaches a high high of 6.04 million. But what will spark debate is this was largely due to growth in non-resident population, aka foreigners. From a human resources perspective, here's what I think - Human resources are critical to the success of Singapore. We know this. We have 3.64 million Singapore citizens and with declining birth rates, we will have an increasingly small and aged workforce. This leads to a whole host of complications - a lack of talent, an overstretched workforce, lower competitiveness and not to forget increased strain on a smaller pool of tax payers. The reality is that to stay competitive, we need to boost our workforce. There's no way around it, unless we're prepared for Singapore to fade away. It's a thorny issue for many locals. It's totally understandable. As a Singaporean born and bred, I can relate. 🫶 But instead of blind resistance, it's more worthwhile thinking... ✨How can we attract the very best international talent? ✨How can we ensure locals have access to opportunities? ✨How can we promote diversity, equity and inclusiveness at work? ✨How can we live harmoniously and preserve the Singapore identity? And how can we can facilitate knowledge transfer? What are the knowledge and skills that we can learn from our foreign friends so that we can keep getting better and better? What do you think? 💡 #binoculer #singaporeanrecruiter #humanresources #careers #hiring
