“Lest we forget”… To me, this means honouring the sacrifices of all service personnel, past and present. My grandad being a particularly special one of them. He taught me that every person matters and that integrity and values are important. That humanity matters. I choose to remember that unfathomable numbers of people from countless nationalities and belief systems have given their lives in service of ensuring that I can live my life in the way that I do. To them, and those that continue to do so, I am grateful. To me “Lest we forget” also means remembering *why*. The lessons we have learned from conflict and sacrifice. Or at least should have learned. For me, it’s not about defending borders, properties, or any one “right way of life”. For me, it’s about defending humanity. Protecting our right to peacefully exist. Ensuring the freedoms of everyone. Otherwise, what good has all this sacrifice served? For me, rememberence means not just my own grandad, but everyone else’s too. Your parents, siblings, cousins, friends, neighbours… Whether their sacrifice was through formal service, or any other impact that conflict has had on their lives. For me, this also means not forgetting what is happening now. The devastation and humanitarian crises across the world. Reflecting on my own behaviour to honour those who have given their lives to allow me even the opportunity. For me, this means remaining conscious of the lasting impact this will have on generations to come and that there will always be more that can be done. Remembering for the future and not just the past. Lest we forget.

On this day, it's important to especially acknowledge the pivotal role that men have played throughout history in defending these universal values. Wars, unfortunately, have been a constant throughout human history. In times of conflict, it's often men who find themselves on the front lines, willing to face danger to protect their loved ones and their communities. Their bravery and sacrifice should not go unnoticed or forgotten. From the battlefields to the daily tasks in society and the home, men play a fundamental role. They are the pillars upon which communities and families are built, providing support, protection, and guidance to those around them. Their work, both visible and invisible, is essential to the functioning of society as a whole. On this day, we honor not only those who have given their lives on the battlefield but also all men who, day after day, make sacrifices for the well-being of their loved ones and their community. We recognize their labor and their commitment to a better world, and we pledge to continue working together to build a more just and peaceful future for all.
