Evaluating for Impact! With evaluation, you stop conducting professional development to tick a box and instead focus on making every initiative more meaningful. A question many professionals often face the question: How do you accurately evaluate impact? In many professional development initiatives you rarely see immediate numbers, instead, you see progressive behavior change. It, therefore, becomes even more important that you can find a definite approach to evaluating impact. A go-to model for some (including myself), is the Kirkpatrick Model. The Kirkpatrick Model as an evaluation tool, explores the progressive impact of any professional growth initiative, from that first day of training to long-term change, within four distinct levels: 1. Reaction - Initial reaction of participants - shows appeal and initial genuine perception 2. Learning - focuses on knowledge absorption - what new skills and knowledge did the participants get 3. Behavior - the applicability of the new knowledge in everyday roles, and active implementation of the acquired strategies 4. Results - here are the numbers - measurable improvements such as in key performance indicators and return on investment of the development initiative If looking for ways to determine whether your organization's development efforts are impactful, then try the four levels of evaluation in the Kirkpatrick Model. They provide data to back up any professional development initiative, allow for continuous refinement, and ultimately strategic alignment.

In the growth zone, coaches focus on specific tasks, such as skill development, filling gaps, or achieving goals. However, great coaches also support people in developing learning agility, which involves staying flexible, growing from mistakes, and successfully responding to challenges. By coaching members to be agile and embrace change, they boost their team's ability to create and capitalize on opportunities. Curiosity is essential for learning agility, as it allows individuals to discover new information and learn from failures. People with a fixed mindset may avoid challenges due to fear of making mistakes or taking feedback as a personal attack. However, coaches can help them shift to a growth mindset, believing that with effort and support, they can stretch and grow. Fixed mindsets involve making broad statements, blaming factors outside their control, and engaging in negative self-talk. Coaches should encourage employees to think differently and view failure as an opportunity for growth. They should praise effort and share their mistakes to build trust and openness. Building trust involves following promises, appreciating team members' contributions, taking shared responsibility for successes and failures, and admitting mistakes and correcting them. Pessimistic or defensive tendencies may indicate a lack of understanding or security. Authentic coaching involves using relatable language, talking about experiences, and giving real examples to create bonds with the people being coached. The future of work is not determined by technology alone, but by a combination of education, exposure, and experience. The article recommends a “70/20/10” learning model, where 10% comes from formal instruction, 20% from social learning or mentorship, and 70% from hands-on experiential practice with feedback. This model ensures that employees understand new skills and apply them effectively, highlighting the importance of this crucial 70% of learning in the workplace.
